p24-1953 Posted December 21, 2009 Report Posted December 21, 2009 i have read alot about smittys and dynomax, but what is the nearest sound to a original muffler? Quote
Norm's Coupe Posted December 21, 2009 Report Posted December 21, 2009 If you are looking for a quiet original type muffler, look no further than the auto parts store. All you need is a quiet one with the proper length and pipe opening. Really don't know what that size is for a 53. Quote
greg g Posted December 21, 2009 Report Posted December 21, 2009 I am using a Cheapie DynoMax turbo flow on my single system. It growls a bit under full acceleration but is quiet at cruising speeds. Sounds exactely right to my ear at 40 to 50mph. I guess I have outgrown glass packs and flow max style stuff, but I don't like the vacuum cleaner whoosh of the stock type. The DynoMax is basically a baffled muffler which bounces the sound around a couple times before setting it free. Quote
BobT-47P15 Posted December 21, 2009 Report Posted December 21, 2009 I believe the sort of flat, oval shaped muffler was original style on these old Plyms. A muffler shop can probably get you one. I had that style, then the engine backfired and made it a bit fatter. Now using a resonator muffler off somthing (don't know what)....makes a little noise, but not really the sound I want. Quote
p24-1953 Posted December 21, 2009 Author Report Posted December 21, 2009 well mine sounded good untill i decided to go over a speed bump with 6 adults in the car. its a little louder now thanks to the 6" gap in the side where the seam came apart. Quote
Norm's Coupe Posted December 21, 2009 Report Posted December 21, 2009 I've had my Smitty on the coupe since about 1995. That's a long time for a muffler, so it probably won't last much longer. When I do have to replace it, I'll go back to a quiet muffler too. Quote
Plymouthy Adams Posted December 21, 2009 Report Posted December 21, 2009 a quiet muffler would be one of a generic in nature, select on inlet outlet size and location, oval shape is good and the longer the quieter on the average..any parts counter guy should/will get you the Walker mufler book so you can pick and choose..
