p24-1953 Posted December 12, 2009 Report Posted December 12, 2009 (edited) okay i may have messed up... when removing the clutch peadal linkage from the clutch housing i failed to remove ALL the bolts. i then jacked up the car removed the cross-member and lowerd the rear of the engine down about 4" to access all of the bolts. when i did this i heard a pop and noticed that part of the clutch assembly was seperated. I now have a ball that sticks out from the frame and a socket that fits over it , but what keeps these together? i thought something poped off but i cant seem to find anything on the ground. the attached diagrham shows the ball dashed and the socket is the part with the grease fitting. what did i lose, what did i damage and can i fix it easly? does any one have photo of a complete correct one? Joe Flanagan Posted December 12, 2009 Report Posted December 12, 2009 The ball and socket arrangment is just a slide-in thing. I believe that when everything is assembled, there is no lateral movement so the parts can't separate. I have heard of them popping apart if overgreased, though. The piece showed in this picture (the one in my fingers) is actually two halves. One or both may be lying on your floor somewhere. If nothing is bent, just set the pieces aside and reassemble once you let the engine back down. Quote
Young Ed Posted December 12, 2009 Report Posted December 12, 2009 For sure Joe they will pop apart. Found out the hardway when we got in Dads 50 ply to go out to dinner after I had done the lube part of the oil change. Dad put the clutch in to start it and that thing fell apart. Quote
Joe Flanagan Posted December 12, 2009 Report Posted December 12, 2009 It was that story I was thinking of. I remember when you posted it. Quote
Young Ed Posted December 12, 2009 Report Posted December 12, 2009 Oh great I've made a lasting impression Follow up we quickly jacked the car back up and put those two 1/2 moon pieces back in and away we went. Quote
p24-1953 Posted December 12, 2009 Author Report Posted December 12, 2009 okay on the diagrham it looked like there was some sorta of retainer clip. i guess i was staring to long Quote
Joe Flanagan Posted December 12, 2009 Report Posted December 12, 2009 Here are all the parts to clutch pedal linkage. Second from the left are the pieces you're talking about, I think. The two-part socket pieces I showed in the previous picture slide into either end of that piece. I think you fit them over the ball first and slide the assembly in. Quote
Dodgeb4ya Posted December 12, 2009 Report Posted December 12, 2009 There is supposed to be a snap ring on the pivot ball stud end of the clutch torque cross shaft. It keeps the 2 split bearing 1/2's in the clutch torque cross shaft. This will keep the assembly from pulling off the frame mounted ball stud. No snap ring is used on the bell housing side of the cross shaft. Bob Quote
Dodgeb4ya Posted December 12, 2009 Report Posted December 12, 2009 okay on the diagrham it looked like there was some sorta of retainer clip. i guess i was staring to long Here's a pic of the groove for the special snap ring that holds in the 2 bearing halves on the engine side of the clutch torque shaft. Don Coatney Posted December 12, 2009 Report Posted December 12, 2009 On a P-15 there is a snap ring on the frame side. Is that spring clip a Dodge only thing? Quote
Joe Flanagan Posted December 12, 2009 Report Posted December 12, 2009 Dodgeb4ya is right. I forgot about the retainer clip. Quote
p24-1953 Posted December 13, 2009 Author Report Posted December 13, 2009 it turn out that my "half moon" pieces were worn to a nice oval shape and will not hold the ball in place, so where can i get new ones at? what exactly would i ask for? would the part number be the same for a 53 as listed above? Quote
Joe Flanagan Posted December 14, 2009 Report Posted December 14, 2009 Roberts sells them. They're called clutch torque tube bushings. According to their catalogue, they're the same from 1933 onward. They list them for four dollars each. 978-363-5407. Quote
p24-1953 Posted December 15, 2009 Author Report Posted December 15, 2009 Joe, roberst says they dont sell them and they are not listed on their web page. Any other idea? Quote
p24-1953 Posted December 15, 2009 Author Report Posted December 15, 2009 i see andy bernbaum may have them Quote
Joe Flanagan Posted December 16, 2009 Report Posted December 16, 2009 I saw them in a Roberts catalogue but apparently it's an old one. Get them from Burn Bomb if he has them. You can also try Vintage Power Wagons. Quote
aero3113 Posted December 16, 2009 Report Posted December 16, 2009 There is no clip that holds them only a clip on the frame side. Once the plate is bolted down they will not come out. I was on Bernbaum's site yesterday and saw them listed. Quote
