claybill Posted December 2, 2009 Report Posted December 2, 2009 i took on a project...1941 coupe ply street rod..very nice but needs lots of care... so i removed the original bench seat , spent 4 days tramping over 3 states, and finally found a perfect set of leather/vinyl seats like new for next to nuthin'$, 5 miles from home.! yea! on the way home i stopped at the auto upholetery man "mr. Link" and got a estimate on headliner and door panels. this morning i painted my renovated steering wheel... so now the big task is fitting the new buckets into that hole! must make a new floor bracket about 4in higher than floor. was awake all night planning, as i do my best work while trying to sleep. i will take my camera with me and in case you like a pic...next thread. bill Quote
Robert Horne Posted December 2, 2009 Report Posted December 2, 2009 My neighbor is junking a 94 Bronco, full size. Gave me the seats, power buckets, and rear bench seat. The rear seat fit PERFECT for the rear seat of my 37 Ply 4 door. The buckets are an easy fit also. I will deliver a case of Root Beer to him. My other neighbor gave me a very nice bench seat, from a Surburban, 3rd row seat, about 48 inch wide, that fits perfect in my 38 or 37 coupe. Now I need to pick up another case of Root Beer. Quote

Merle Coggins Posted December 2, 2009 Report Posted December 2, 2009 i have 3 cloth bucket seats..didnt use them, on the way to the dump unless someone needs them..gray, minor stains, high pedastal, from a van..bill That's awefully tempting Bill. I've been contemplating what it would be like to have a more modern seat in my truck. My seat is good, but not really comfortable on a longer ride. Of course that would take away from the "stock" look, but as long as I don't damage the original seat base I could always put the original back in. I may need to make a road trip. What do you want for them? Merle Quote

claybill Posted December 6, 2009 Author Report Posted December 6, 2009 buckets....these came out of a new saturn..maybe a 2005. i looked at jeep cherokee and volvo..they all seem to be ok IF YU CAN FIND A PR NOT ALL STAINED AND DIRTY. they almost all will do. power hookup seems easy..just make sure yuo get the seat controls not the door controls. i am retaining the originL STEERING WHEEL AND POSITION...THEREFORE the seats will have to be raised for a 12 in ? off floor seating position. so i built a little frame to bolt to the floor and then bolted the seats to that... frame was made of 1-1/2 rectangular tubng with a few tabs. #1. make sure the seat you get has level/equal sliders 2. sometimes arm rests get in the way. 3. make sure you measure/fit the drivers seat directly in front of the center of the steering wheel..then other measurements will fall into line with that. van seats are toooo high. coupes are toooo low. sedans are good..BUT SEDAN FRONT SEATS DONT tilt forward..only coupes do.!! seats..they are cheap!!! dont overpay those guys!!! a nice set of cloth seats should be 50-75.00- and leather/vinyl 75-100.00 theycant get any money from recyclers on the seats! and there isnt much call for them. and usually one is stained teribly!! keep looking.....i went to 5 yards to get a nice set of leathers.. bill Quote
Plymouthy Adams Posted December 6, 2009 Report Posted December 6, 2009 I know a guy who goes to the wrecking yards for nice bucket seats and does a good business at the swap meets..he has a unigque system to clean the seats to like new looks for minimum out of pocket cost...all does in the confort of his driveway...bucket seats are a disireable look in a custom car...DO pay close attention to the mounting of the seats and adaptive platforms..safety is a prime concern...there are mounting brackets out there that are very heavy made, extremely adjustable for height and angle...I have a set I bought long ago..they are worth the small cost these well made brackets bring on the market.. Norm's Coupe Posted December 6, 2009 Report Posted December 6, 2009 I just learned something I didn't know before, about installing seats just a few days ago. Those installing new seats, or even reinstalling their old seats might want to check on. As many of you may have seen on the news, Toyota is recalling a lot of their cars to keep the floor mats from getting under the gas pedal. Guess there has been a few accidents due to this. This got my wife worried about her floor mat in her 02 Kia Spectra. When we bought it new, it came with the factory type mats. It also came with a special bracket that gets bolted to the seat mounting bolt, with a pin on the bracket that you slip the mat onto to hold it in place. The dealer didn't install it before we picked up the car, but it was in the glove box sealed in a bag with mounting instructions. But.........both my wife and I never cared if it was there or not. So........never took the car in to have it installed. I just put it away in the cabinet. She got worried when she heard about the Toyota problem. So........I dug the bracket out to install it for her. I assumed you just remove the one seat bolt, then tighten it down good and that would be that. But........after reading the instructions that came with it, it said to tighten the seat mounting bolt to 33 Ft. Lbs after installing the bracket. So.......evidently there is a set torque rating to tighten the seat mounting bolts. Not just tighten it and say that's that. Just thought I would throw that out there for what it's worth. Even after I ran the mounting bolt down on her seat as tight as it would go with the ratchet, I was still able to make a few whole turns with the torque wrench to get to the 33 FT. LBS. Quote
Plymouthy Adams Posted December 6, 2009 Report Posted December 6, 2009 I believe the recommend torque is sufficient to compress the carpet and prevent the seat from being loose, a loose seat (masked by the cushion of the carpet) over a period of time could eventually distort the bolt holes in the floot makeing its mounting questionable that is amplified should you be in an accident..
