daddyo23 Posted November 1, 2009 Report Posted November 1, 2009 Some time ago I picked up a pumpkin with 3.73 gears from Young Ed. The only problem was it had come out of a 53-54 that had the narrow spline axles. My '48 has the wider spline. I had mentioned that to Ed and he said that his Dad and him have changed out the side gears for different splines a number of times.I had never done that and have read if it is not done right you will have quite a howl and wear your gears out quicker. Well. today Ed and his Dad came down and did the operation. I had taken the old pumpkin out at a friend's place. He is a member in our local POC group and has a nice shop. Ed's Dad Jeff did a great job on switching the gears and Ed helped me put it back together. Re-did the back brakes (what was left of them) as I hadn't touched those since I got this car 2 years ago. When I got it I put Charlie's front disc kit on and it has worked so well I never bothered with the back, I know I should have but I have no excuse. Anyway, it was a nice morning with good people and it works great. Quiet and stops well. It was fun standing in the pit putting the pumpkin in, Ed putting the backing plates on as I was tightening the rear bolts, listening to Jeff and Jack swap old stories. And those two do have the stories;). Thanks for the help Ed, things like this is what makes this such a great site. Quote
Young Ed Posted November 1, 2009 Report Posted November 1, 2009 Wayne it was fun. You missed out on some great chili homemade by Jacks wife. Quote
greg g Posted November 1, 2009 Report Posted November 1, 2009 What better way to validate the value of this forum than to see it participants get together for some wrenching, knuckle busting and lie swapping. Kowledge is like manure, it works better when it spread around............ Glad you guys had an opportunity to spread some. Quote
Paul Hoffmeyer Posted November 1, 2009 Report Posted November 1, 2009 And after Ed got back to his house, I met him there and picked up a driver's side striker plate and a used glove box for a pattern for my '45 Dodge pickup project. Not the first time Ed has been helpful. Paul H Quote

Young Ed Posted November 2, 2009 Report Posted November 2, 2009 So how was your road test? Can you tell the difference? Quote
daddyo23 Posted November 2, 2009 Author Report Posted November 2, 2009 I notice a little difference in rpm. Didn't expect alot, but it does help. I'll tell ya though, the car does seem quieter. And it really stops now. Thanks again, Ed. You shoulda run for POC prez, I know alot of people would have voted for you. Quote
Young Ed Posted November 2, 2009 Report Posted November 2, 2009 I found a 3.54 now but I forgot who said they had it. It was someone on the dodge truck chat night. I'd love to get that for my 48. I've got the T5 in the basement. Hopefully I'll be able to do some of the initial setup for it down there over the winter. I won't be able to bring the engine down there though so some will have to be done outside when its warmed up again. Quote
