Herr Otto Posted October 21, 2009 Report Posted October 21, 2009 I know this is a silly question, but I checked the rear end fluid today and it was extremly low, I almost added 2 quarts till it dribbled out the inspection/fill hole. Now I have yet to drive the truck but just sitting there it is leaking fluid out the pinion seal. Is it safe to say the pinion seal is bad, or did I overfill it? Thanks, Otto Quote

I put a new Pinion Seal on my Chrysler and it still drips a dime spot here and there on the floor after a short drive. Is it a Sleeve that fits over the Pinion Shaft/Sleeve ? I noticed wear in one place from where my old Pinion Seal had rubbed a band around the Sleeve, and it is my guess that where it is driping through. Tom Quote

Young Ed Posted October 21, 2009 Report Posted October 21, 2009 Tom you've got it pretty much. Its a thin sleeve you slide over the pinion to renew that grooved area you mentioned. On my p15 I didnt push my seal quite in all the way but far enough that it wasnt rubbing on the drive shaft mount. It doesnt seem to leak after 3 years. Quote
Merle Coggins Posted October 22, 2009 Report Posted October 22, 2009 Yes, replace the seal and check the breather. A plugged breather will cause oil to get pushed out past the seals when pressure builds up in the axle. To find which speedy sleeve you need you have to measure the diameter of the yolk. I also like to add a little Permatex #9 Tack & Seal or Loctite Sleeve and Seal Retainer (NOT Silicone) under the sleeve to be sure it seals against the yolk. I've used Speedy Sleeves many times in my line of work and this method has never failed me yet. Merle Quote

Tom Skinner Posted October 22, 2009 Report Posted October 22, 2009 Dear Merle, I am aware of the Breather Vent, and mine is "Clear" or working properly. I also used sealer at the Yolk so I know for a Fact the Sleeve Groove is the Culprit. If anyone locates a Speedi-Sleeve please say where you got one. Thanks! I guess I'll just drip slowly until then. To get that Pinion Seal out you need a puller that will monk up my seal and I'll need a new Seal also so I'm not in a rush. Tom Quote
