randroid Posted August 17, 2009 Report Posted August 17, 2009 Norm, I posted something about hornets about a month ago and had some fun with it, but I haven't mentioned the new nests that have been made since then because we all have our own stories about small things that can hurt us. There seem to be more hornets around this year and I've been trying to figure out why, and the closest I can come is something closely related to why men have nipples. -Randy Quote
jimainnj Posted August 17, 2009 Report Posted August 17, 2009 call one of the bee hive keepers they seem to be looking for bee's, A fire house around here had over 50,000 in overhang, they came and got them no charge. Quote
greg g Posted August 18, 2009 Report Posted August 18, 2009 Honey bee populations are suffering, and as nature hates a vacuum, the hornets and wasps, have taken their place. Early fall is the time of the year that sees the greatest numbers of mature adults. Most hornets and wasp colonies will die out as they do not overwinter. Quote
Plymouthy Adams Posted August 18, 2009 Report Posted August 18, 2009 Norm..things changed...yeah, you getting old and lazy and the bees are taking advantage of that fact...and you think the bees are a problems..wait till the birds find out and move in ..Alfred Hitchcock's new novel, Return of the Birds, staring Norm, mild manner man in rose colored glasses who tours his driveway in his P15 Quote
radioguy7 Posted August 19, 2009 Report Posted August 19, 2009 Greg' date='These are the yellow with black stripe wasps that I get around here. Even had a nest of them in my bathroom drain vent in the roof. That one was so big it stopped up the vent for the bathroom. Can't wait for fall to come around for the one by the gutter on the garage. Haven't been able to get up there to clean it because of them since the maple tree seeds got in the gutter. Now I have little trees growing in that gutter. So.....I'll have to dowse that area good before I can clean the gutter. They were in that same spot last year too. Something has changed around here. Never had problems like this until about 3 or 4 years ago, and I've lived here since 1973.[/quote'] Not just for you, I live in CT and 2 years ago I had a huge wasps nest in a tree in my driveway, hung kind of low too. Funny thing is these things wouldn't bother you unless you got within 5 feet of it. Other than that is seems they were happy just going about their business. I left them alone until the first frost then took it down and burned it. I also had the same issue with my roof drain vent as well. This year I am finding one or two inside the house each day when I get home from work. Quote
