Bob, I don't know about 54. I have a 50 and its right for that.

Tony, you should have a metal screw in plug. No tank came with a rubber plug. Someone put that there maybe because the threads are messed up or something. I would remove it and see what the story is.

Tony what you just described sounds exactly like the stock plug. But its aluminum not plastic.

The tank on the 49 P15 coupe has the rubber plug......looks like this.

If it's not truly rubber, it sure looks like it. Never tried to take one out.

I'm curious to see if your plug is truly plastic upon its removal. My 51 I pulled the plug on was aluminum. And strangely enough for a tank extremely filled with rust and even rusted out in places the plug came right out.

On that tank in the picture, I did not try to remove the plug.

It had actually been coated inside at some time in the past.....is kind of off

white in there.

First, took it to the car wash and used the wand on it.

Don't think the proprietor was too keen on that, but I was

about done when he came by.

Next, cleaned it out with mineral spirits, then Dawn dishwashing

liquid, and then rattlling a chunk of chain around inside. Had to jam

on the plugged up pickup tube with a coat hanger. That took a while,

but finally went thru.
