i posted a while ago about the 47 coupe i have , well me and the kids were out in the garage and after a couple hours tuning it up (points ,cap rotor wire plugs) it runs pretty good very smooth it got us to thinking maybe we will keep the flat head around for a while. nows heres my ??? theres a water valve at the back of the head, its leaking can i by pass it??? can you get replacements????

also what oil do i use in it ??? weight ??? filter ?????

i also found a 2 1lb set up offenhauser what style carbs does it need???are there other hop ups for it ???

i think its a 218 as thats all i have seen listed for a 47

i would also like to say this site is great i have learned tons over the last couple weeks and i'm shure theres alot more to learn..

Does it look like this? So far I have my original one one other and I think 4 NOS ones. So far everyone I've tried leaks. I've only tried one NOS one but it leaked too. The rubber stuff in there is still old. You can certainly bypass the heater or go to Napa and get a manual shut off valve. Thats what I had on my car before getting the NOS valves. You just have to open the hood to turn the heat on with that style.

218 for the Plymouth is correct..the twin carbs..number of people running different things...they must be jetted correctly and sync'ed..you need a specail tool for that..don't leave home without it...I believe Ed posted the pic of the valve in question..that is the hot water control valve for the heater. As Ed stated..bypassing is not that hard..you can piut a nipple there..pluymb in a cable actuated aftermarket valve and continue to operate as normal..most parts houses have a book..ask to see all the control valves..pick one by inlet outlet size..cable op and physical size to suit your application.

mines a little different it looks more like a y one , if i remeber correctly one hose goes to the pass side one to the drivers the cables were cut off mine anyway , the manual valve under the hood is a good idea then i can still have heat..

I think you might enjoy keeping the old flathead. They can be hopped up for the fun of it although you're not likely to get huge horsepower out of one. They are more of a torquer than a high rev powerhouse. They always attract attention and produce smiles if you open the hood and people see a couple of carbs lurking in there. Lots of opinions on oil. I've heard that the long stroke of these motors calls for a fairly heavy viscosity oil, as high as 20w-50, at least in warmer climates. I run Shell Rotella T 15w-50 in my freshly rebuilt 218.

I used the Offy manifold. I have stock carbs I found in various places. I'm using the original jetting but wonder if I'm not a little over fueled. Even though I have the choke hooked up on the rear carb, it starts quite easily when cold by a couple jabs on the throttle. Has anyone tried using only one accelerator pump thus making a primary carb and a secondary? Buick did this in the early '40s. It was the forerunner of the 4 barrell carb.

I'm running stock carbs with both pumps set in the middle of the 3 stroke settings. Seems to run well although my gas mileage is not very impressive. I have the 4:10 rear end and I definitely have a heavy throttle foot.

Might be interesting to unhook the pump linkage on one. I run no chokes at all and with the electric fuel pump it fires up with just one push on the gas pedal, and I warm it up for a minute or two before hitting the road.

i also use dual carbs...i just used 2 stock carters. yes a gas hog but not too bad plug readings. looking at the carb chart in yesterdays threads, the jetting from a 1940/41 is smaller than the 46's-49's...just change main jets...or swap out for the older carb. everything else is basically the same.

yeah my water valve looks like the second picture, elec fuel pump ???are you running a 12 volt system ???

if so how do you do the starter i figured i could run a alt. instead of the generator and swap out the gauges and lights ,ign is no biggie either my only ?? is the starter

looks like flat 6 with dual ones it is

The fuel pump is 6 volt. You can still get them new on ebay. I got mine at auto zone for under $40. In fact, I bought a second one and carry it as a spare since they are so easy to swap out.

With fresh wiring, a good tune up and some 00 battery cables, no need for 12volts. I run a 6v-12v step up for my XM radio.

ok , hows a step up work i have a set of led tail lights i would like to run and maybe i can use that instaed of a small 12 volt in the trunk for tail lights
