Allan Parkhurst Posted January 23, 2007 Report Posted January 23, 2007 I'am ready to install the 1/4 windows on my 48 B1b. Do I put the rubber on the glass first or on the truck first. Quote
Merle Coggins Posted January 23, 2007 Report Posted January 23, 2007 I believe you put the rubber around the glass first, then pull the lip on the rubber molding through the opening in the cab. Quote
Young Ed Posted January 23, 2007 Report Posted January 23, 2007 I would agree. Never done 1/4 windows but thats how I did my windshield. Quote
Allan Parkhurst Posted January 24, 2007 Author Report Posted January 24, 2007 Thanks I will try that. I tried several times, but now I rolled the molding inside out and it looks like that is the proper way. Thanks for the help!! Quote
Young Ed Posted January 24, 2007 Report Posted January 24, 2007 Here's a technique you can try. Probably requires a second person. You put a rope in the channel for the metal something like clothes line. Get the window started and then pull the rope so it pulls the gasket into place. Thats how the pros do it. I watched the shop do that for dads jeep. The second set of hands is for holding the glass while you work the rope. Quote
anthonyb Posted January 24, 2007 Report Posted January 24, 2007 Be sure you lube the rubber thoroughly and be prepared to learn a few new words. Quote
Byronb3b Posted January 24, 2007 Report Posted January 24, 2007 I think half the town learned new words when I installed mine. The cord in the channel works for pulling the lip of the rubber over the metal edge of the window opening. You may need somthing to pry some of the rubber lip out and over the edge, be SURE it is NOT METAL, it only takes one little slip to chip the glass, good luck Quote
Rich Gengo Posted January 24, 2007 Report Posted January 24, 2007 Depending on who's brand of rubber you use will determine how hatefull the job is. I literally modified my whole truck and putting in those two windows was the biggest nightmare. Quote
Bob_Koch Posted January 24, 2007 Report Posted January 24, 2007 I've heard discussion as to which side of the truck you should start on but not sure what the final answer was. Do you start with the rubber on the outside and work it in? or visa-versa? Quote
Allan Parkhurst Posted January 24, 2007 Author Report Posted January 24, 2007 OK 1. put molding on glass 2. from inside to outside 3. two people to install 4. use rope to open molding 5. lube +++ 6. Practice bad words 7. Dito 8. use 8# sledge or go to Auto Glass installer. Got it. Thanks to all Quote
Young Ed Posted January 24, 2007 Report Posted January 24, 2007 Allan thats a very good list. Maybe we should send that one on to the technical archives I've started on the outside of the few windows I've done. I think thats the proper technique. Quote
Bob_Koch Posted January 24, 2007 Report Posted January 24, 2007 Allan, who did you get the rubber from? That seems to make a big difference. Quote
Allan Parkhurst Posted January 24, 2007 Author Report Posted January 24, 2007 I got the rubber from Roberts. Is there an easier supplier? Quote
Merle Coggins Posted January 24, 2007 Report Posted January 24, 2007 I was planning on using Steele Rubber. Any objections? As I remember, when I was removing my glass, the rubber lip goes to the inside of the cab. This lip also covered the edge of the interier panel. So you'd be installing the glass from the outside in.
