I was told that the 4 speed trans, needs a 4 speed bell housing (I am doing the same switch), tough shifting is most likely the forks, it was run low on oil, and or 3 to 2 the synchronizers are bad (if it even had them)

I know for 39-47 trucks the 3spd and 4spd bellhousings are drilled differently. We took the 4spd out of dads 40 plymouth thats being restored and put it into the 46WC sh*t truck we use at the cabin. It does a fair amount of work for us up there.

I bought a 4 speed for my '52 1 ton to replace the floor shifted 3 speed. I was hoping it was going to be a bolt on with just a modification to the driveshaft. The bolt pattern is completely different and will require a different bell housing. I don't know if I'm going to continue with the swap or not. Mike

I can say for certain that the bell housing for 3 speed and 4 speed is different and not interchangeable on the transmission end due to different bolt pattern for the two transmissions. I just made a switch in B2B from 3 speed column shift to 4 speed floor shift. Also had to shorten drive shaft by about 2 inches to accomodate the different sized transmissions. That cost $55 and they put in new u joints on both ends for an additional $25.
