Trying to replace the rear tranny seal. How the heck do you get the 1 1/4 nut that holds on the brake drum off? I've tried everything, heat, pipe on the end of my long wrench, cursing. I'm putting so much pressure on the shaft, I'm afraid I'm going to damage the tranmission. Any ideas? This isn't a left-handed nut is it?

It's alyways something.

As a last resort , split the nut if you have access to the sides . Use a nut splitter , or a cutting disk on an angle grinder , some guys have been known to drill a series of holes accross the nut and then split it with a chisel . It doesn't have a cotter pin in it that you can't see does it ?

Is the handbrake on? If not, make sure it is. Are all remaining parts of the cotter pin removed? Have you used an extender on your wrench? I do not believe you will hurt the tranny. Remember when you take off under fairly high RPM you are putting way more stress on the tranny than trying to remove the nut. An impact wrench works best in this situation. If you have one, use it. I have never failed to remove one of these nuts and I do not believe you have to split the nut to remove it, unless it has been sitting in salt water for a while.:P

Rt,

This is what I did to tighten the bolt, pulled the brake real hard.

It was just enough to hold the torque.

The same for getting it loose with some hammering on the wrench.

good luck

The vibration and hammering of an impact gun should do it.If you don't have one soak it with penitrating oil and put a boxed end wrench on it and hit the wrench with some sharp blows, sometimes the shock will get it started.

I tightened down the brake adjuster all the way, then put the tranny back in (minus the clutch and pressure plate) and bolted it on - the only way I could figure to keep it from turning. The nut came off with the help of an extended wrench handle. The next problem - I don't have a puller big enough to get the brake drum off. Looks like a trip to the tool store is in order - I need a bigger puller anyway.

Thanks everyone for the advice and help.
