Jim Yergin Posted April 29, 2009 Report Posted April 29, 2009 My O/D transmission leaks where the adaptor plate joins the rear case. I have replaced the gasket twice. The second time I used the copper spray gasket sealant. It still leaked. I am about to dissassemble the transmission again to replace the over-ride clutch. I am considering using RTV gasket maker on the leaking joint to stop the leak. Is that a good idea? Should I use it with the paper gasket or without the paper gasket? If I use it with the gasket I assume I apply it to both sides. Is there a particular preferred RTV material? Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks. Jim Yergin Quote
Young Ed Posted April 29, 2009 Report Posted April 29, 2009 I would use it with the gasket. Try making the gasket out of a little thicker paper. The stuff I have used was black and resistant to gas oil etc. I used it for my honda lawn mower which I replaced the crank on. The honda has no gasket between the 1/2s of the crank case. Its only sealed with RTV( you are supposed to buy genuine honda seal ) Quote
Jim Yergin Posted April 29, 2009 Author Report Posted April 29, 2009 Thanks Ed. The second time I did use a thicker gasket material but it still leaked. Jim Yergin Quote
Merle Coggins Posted April 29, 2009 Report Posted April 29, 2009 Is there another place it could be leaking from besides the gasket surface? When mating two metal flange surfaces I like to use Permatex Anerobic Gasket Maker. It goes on like a gell, but once you bolt things together and let it cure it becomes very stiff like hard plastic. It will fill any voids and seal the two metal pieces, but won't squish and work loose like RTV, or soft gaskets, can do. Here's a pic of the Napa branded stuff Quote
Jim Yergin Posted April 29, 2009 Author Report Posted April 29, 2009 Thanks Merle. I am pretty sure it is leaking at the gasket seal. I will check the anaerobic gasket maker out. Jim Yergin Quote
James_Douglas Posted April 29, 2009 Report Posted April 29, 2009 Jim, Sounds like the case or adaptor is not flat. James Quote
