n1gzd_plymouth Posted April 27, 2009 Report Posted April 27, 2009 I am going to use a carter ball ball that has a flange that sticks out near the top of the carburetor. My stock carburetor did not have this flange so many simple air cleaners that just clamp at the top will fit. It seems that with this type of carb you need a special clamp that fits this shape. Can someone tell me what aircleaners to look for or even better, tell me a hotrod type aircleaner that will fit this. I tried clamping something to it but there is not enough metal sticking up above the flange. Thanks, Rebecca Quote
greg g Posted April 27, 2009 Report Posted April 27, 2009 Why not just put the other air horn on the new carb? I beleive its a bolt on dea. Only thing that might be different is the choke linkage. Quote
claybill Posted April 27, 2009 Report Posted April 27, 2009 rebecca//unhook the little rod that connects the plunger and take out the 3 screws...and swap that top with your other carb..all are the same. bill Quote
Norm's Coupe Posted April 27, 2009 Report Posted April 27, 2009 Easier yet. Just take the clamp off the original air cleaner. Use it to clamp the new air cleaner on the original carb. Quote
Don Coatney Posted April 27, 2009 Report Posted April 27, 2009 Here is what I did. Made some aluminum risers and slotted them so they would clamp to the B&B top. I doubled up aftermarket shorties to insure plenty of air flow. Just last week I installed K&N clones that are cleanable so I should never have to buy replacement filters. Quote
Normspeed Posted April 27, 2009 Report Posted April 27, 2009 If you want to go with aftermarket air filters, you can get them from a place called Car Products in Paragonah Utah. 435-477-8213. They look like the ones that fit strombergs but these are a 2 5/16 instead of a 2 5/8" size. I bought a pair for around $10 each. Part Number is C5035P. There is enough metal above the flange to secure them. Or, like Greg and Claybill said, if your old carb was an early B&B with the longer neck, just swap top plates. Or, I might have an old 53 oil bath setup in the shed with the correct clamping setup. I believe you would need the whole filter, not just the clamp. There is a flange on the filter that matches up to the carb flange, and a gasket to ensure a tight fit. Quote
claybill Posted April 27, 2009 Report Posted April 27, 2009 even better yet....i bought the little 'chromie air cleaners' from WIRTH'S AUTO (he sells old hot rod goodies) for $9.95 they slip-fit right on the B&B's...but i only used the base plate and bought a perfect fit FRAM #3924..PERFECT FIT AND TRIPLE THE AIR!!! you can buy the chrome filter base only for $6.00 too!!! bill Quote

moose Posted April 28, 2009 Report Posted April 28, 2009 This one is probably just what you are looking for, and it's in really good shape. I do have another bigger one from a truck you can look at too. Quote
n1gzd_plymouth Posted April 28, 2009 Author Report Posted April 28, 2009 that one looks perfect. the smaller the better for this application. thanks. I will call you saturday morning to see if you are around. Thanks!! Rebecca Quote
claybill Posted April 28, 2009 Report Posted April 28, 2009 rebecca..the one from moose looks perfect! the 'little chroomies' as i call 'em ,is what don coatney is using doubled up for additional air flow. they come in 2 different sizes to fit the top of your carb B&B carb. looks like don has the smaller one as he had to modify a new base.. bill...
