1940plymouth Posted April 2, 2009 Report Posted April 2, 2009 I haven't bid on anything on ebay for along time, I was under the impression that payment was only accepted thru pay pal. Is that correct? Thanks, Bob Quote
Reg Evans Posted April 2, 2009 Report Posted April 2, 2009 Any form of payment is OK for eBay motors but for the regular ebay that is the case. Quote
Reg Evans Posted April 2, 2009 Report Posted April 2, 2009 I just listed a Large old neon Postal Telegraph electric clock on the regular eBay yesterday and was informed that I could only accept PayPal for payment. I had to remove the " I accept money orders" before the listing would go through. BOGUS ! Quote
BobT-47P15 Posted April 2, 2009 Report Posted April 2, 2009 Ya gotta remember - ebay owns PayPal, far as i know. Seems to be a small fee in there somewhere for them. There are some people who, in the past, have stated in their ebay ads they will NOT accept PayPal.....perhaps due to a bad experience or something. Wonder what they're gonna do now?? How is ebay going to check on every seller to make sure they use PayPal? I have communicated with sellers via e-mail who said, sure send a money order--which I did, even tho their ad said otherwise. So, you may be able to get away with asking people to contact you thru the "ask the seller a question" feature regarding form of the payment. I opened a separate checking account for use with PayPal, so if anyone were to get into it, there would not be much money and would not mess with my personal account. Just a thought. If you get too much $$$ in your PayPal account, you can transfer it to checking - or vice versa, to add to your PP acount. They just seem to keep making rules to benefit themselves. As long as enough people keep using it and making enough money to suit them, I suppose it will continue in business. We will just have to kiss up. Quote

That's ridiculous though forcing everyone to use PayPal for payment. Regardless of how many scams are out there on both sides of the fence, payment options should be left to the buyer and seller, not ebay. I'm glad I got away from going on ebay for buying or selling something. Forcing everyone to use PayPal is just another way for ebay to get more money out of the sellers and some buyers through the extra fee's charged for using PayPal. Bob, people don't have to kiss up to ebay to sell their stuff. They can sell it on Craigs List or a place like here for free. Quote
BobT-47P15 Posted April 2, 2009 Report Posted April 2, 2009 Right, Norm. ebay is just one place to sell things. Thus far, it has proved to be one of the best, and a way to get the most money for your item. There are problems from time to time, granted. With craigslist you won't wake up in the morning and find some crazy, high bid on your item, since you list for a stated price. There is also "kijiji", owned by ebay now. It's free, but at certain places they try to funnel you over to ebay. Quote

Thanks, Bob[/quote'] Bob send a message to the seller and ask him if he will accept a money order. He most likely will its just as stated do to ebays policy the seller can no longer put it in his listing. Quote
BobT-47P15 Posted April 2, 2009 Report Posted April 2, 2009 Actually, for a normal buy-sell situation, i rather like PayPal. You can send your payment quickly and get your item sooner. Most times, however, I'm not in a hurry. The one thing that I got caught on some time back was when I sold a $1200 guitar for a friend. The buyer put the PP payment on his credit card. For that, they charged a $50 fee to the seller. As I don't keep much $ in the PP account most of the time, I just do not bid on some item calling for PP only. May have to change that thought now......we'll see. Quote
theDyls3 Posted April 2, 2009 Report Posted April 2, 2009 I agree with BobT, I too like paypal. The one time that someone ripped me off on Ebay and never bothered sending the item paypal took care of it and refunded my money. I did have to wait 2 or 3 months, but still:rolleyes: . I tend to shy away from people who say "no paypal" on their ads. Quote
dezeldoc Posted April 2, 2009 Report Posted April 2, 2009 Here is the skinny from ebay rep, you cannot advertise to accept checks or money orders in most catagories, but if the buyer asks if you will accept check or money order it is OK. Quote
BobT-47P15 Posted April 2, 2009 Report Posted April 2, 2009 So----there seems to be a way to get around using PP, but they are certainly slanting it in their direction, aren't they? Quote

Doesn't mean they are crooks just because they don't take PayPal or use the ebay check out system. I use to sell a little on ebay myself up until about two years ago when I got tired of hassling with it. In every listing I made I had the following statement. "I do not accept PayPal or any other online forms of payment. Payment to be made by Postal Money Order only." In the description there was this statement. "I do not use ebay checkout systems. Winning bidder to contact me after auction is over through ebay message for payment instructions and to give their shipping address." I did those for two reasons. First, I don't trust giving financial info to anyone on the internet. There isn't a system made that hasn't been hacked at one time or another. Second, when it comes to shipping info, I wanted it direct from the horses mouth, not ebay's. That said. In most cases people using ebay's shipping calculator are getting ripped off (or they were back then). I could ship things cheaper by UPS, FedEx or USPS in most cases using the rates posted on those places website or rate books. Ebay's calculator always said charge more. I had just the opposite policy you do. I would never bid on something when the buyer said, "Payment by PayPal Only", because I preferred sending a money order. Quote

I am a part time Ebay merchant, selling mostly Antique radio's but the seller can accept any form of payment he choses. The statement that only Paypal can be used is totally untrue. It's up to the seller to specify what form of payment he accepts. I have accepted money orders, personal checks, paypal, bidpay, gearpay, bank checks, even concealed cash from a few. Just be sure to read what forms of payment the seller accepts and if you are not sure ask him a question thru the link on the auction page. Quote

I use to think that too Radioguy until the other day when I went to list a clock on the regular eBay ( not eBay Motors ) I got the listing all ready to go and hit List Your Item and got a notice that I could not accept money orders. In my listing under forms of payment accepted I said I would accept money orders too. I had to remove that sentence before the listing went through. I still need to go back and revise my text to say I'll accept mo's and see if that works. Quote
radioguy7 Posted April 5, 2009 Report Posted April 5, 2009 Reg Evans, Check your listing, I have a feeling you had something checked off that would only let you specify Paypal. I have listed items as late as yesterday with not problems listing other forms of payment. Another thing to avoid is using Ebay checkout, tell your bidders not to use it and to contact you directly at the end of the auction for payment instructions. Quote
Plymouthy Adams Posted April 5, 2009 Report Posted April 5, 2009 I think E-bay in their quest to police the business is trying to use the Paypal to that end as there is better protection to both the buyer and seller as far as the changing hands of money is concerned and if there should be a dispute..the avenue to get a refund is greatly increased..
