Hi all. I had to remove my tranny cover to install my transmission (fluid drive) and now when I put the cover on it won't shift. It's either sloppy or stuck. Tried numerous times, changing the shifter location as well. Any tips? It's a 4spd synchro.

It looks as though one of the shift collars is shifted to one side, into gear so to speak. Make sure your trans is in neutral with all shift collars in their middle position, then see that the shift lever is also in neutral and try it again.

Maybe you've already tried that, but from your picture that's my observation.

I agree with Merle- it looks like 3rd to 4th syncro shift sleeve is not in nuetral where it needs to be for installing shifter cover.

From what I can see, the trans is shifted into 3rd and reverse. The output shaft should turn when trans is in neutral. Pull the shift lever out of the cover and check for shift rail alignment for neutral. Slots for all 3 rails should line up in neutral pos. The lever may have slipped past a rail slot when you had the cover off. Trans in neutral, rails in neutral, install cover, recheck trans output shaft for neutral, then install shift lever.

Exactly right. It's such a tight fit, I had to manuver the the cover quite a bit to get it on the case. I must have forced it to the point of getting the shift rail out of neutral. Every time I tried it, I got the same failed result. FINALLY, I removed the rear engine mount bolts and gingerly lowered the tranny so I had enough room to place the cover pretty much straight down on the case. Success! Thanks for the help!

It's always nice to know what the answer to the problem was, for the contributors and for those who follow along.

I couldn't agree more, hopefully this can help someone else down the road.
