steveplym Posted March 28, 2009 Report Posted March 28, 2009 I"ve been looking to either get my vacuum motor rebuilt or switch over to a 12v electric one. Anyone purchsed the 12v motor out there? How is it working for you? I know others have been happy with their factory wiper motor rebuild from wiperman.com and I may do that, but I was just looking at other possibilities. Quote
Plymouthy Adams Posted March 28, 2009 Report Posted March 28, 2009 I opted for 12 volts but with an entirely different approach along with intermittant control and everything...two speed motor...it is a combination of three different cars plus your own mount depending on where you place the motor..and on that you have a number of options..spans/joins technology of 4 decades... hkestes41 Posted March 28, 2009 Report Posted March 28, 2009 I am using the Newport Engineering http://www.newportwipers.com/app_main.html motor on my 48 P15. Took a total of about 45 minutes to install start to finish. Was a piece of cake. Uses the stock arm linkage and bolts to the stock location under the dash. Comes with new bushings to fit in the linkage as well. Switch fits in the stock hole but you have to but their adaptor if you want to use your stock knob. They also offer an intermittent switch, but I just used the 2 speed version. Very happy with mine. None of the wipers slowing down when you pull away from a stop light. Quote
steveplym Posted March 28, 2009 Author Report Posted March 28, 2009 Thanks for the info HKestes41. I had seen those motors on ebay, but forgot the name of the company. I may have to wait a while until I can purchase that. It would be nice to get rid of the vacuum hose and canister and just deal with the wiring. Maybe I'll just try to avoid the rain this summer and hope Santa brings me a new wiper motor for Xmas. Quote
Don Coatney Posted March 29, 2009 Report Posted March 29, 2009 I have heard there may be a radio clearance issue with the electric wiper motor conversion? Quote
Howard Tarnoff Posted March 29, 2009 Report Posted March 29, 2009 I too have the newport. Only modification I needed to make was to shorten the shaft on the switch they provided and file it down to accomodate the stock above dash mounted knob on my 49. I note no difference in size between the Newport and the wiper motor I removed from the 49. Quote
hkestes41 Posted March 29, 2009 Report Posted March 29, 2009 I have heard there may be a radio clearance issue with the electric wiper motor conversion? Don, You are correct. In the P15 anyway you can not run your stock radio with the Newport wiper motor. My old radio was trashed anyway so I just bought a radio delete plate and removed it. But you make a good point that if you have a good radio that you want to keep the Newport wipers are not for you. Quote
steveplym Posted March 29, 2009 Author Report Posted March 29, 2009 I could see that being an issue. It already is an issue with my car as I could see not having much room to work behind the dash with the stock radio in there. That is why I haven't put a radio in there yet, but probably will not. Thanks for your input guys, it's nice to know of the issues with this before I end up finding them out for myself. Quote
Plymouthy Adams Posted March 29, 2009 Report Posted March 29, 2009 the wiper I used mounts about anywhere you want it but the radio was an issue on the AC install..here in the s0outh, AC has priority... Quote
Captain Neon Posted March 31, 2009 Report Posted March 31, 2009 I have heard there may be a radio clearance issue with the electric wiper motor conversion? Good to know. Makes me glad that I had Bob Ficken rebuild mine. In the 22 years that my P15 has been in the family, the wipers have never worked this well. Quote
