Young Ed
Ok as some of you know I'm stashing parts that will someday become a 40 plymouth pickup. Well I found a few more things lately so I'm starting to plan again. Its going to be a slight custom. Plan is dual carbs and exhaust, a 5spd swap, rear axle swap, and disk brakes for the front. My current idea as far as looks is stock except 49 ply bumpers which I have already and 57-58 plymouth wheel covers. The issue here is I'm pretty sure the 57-58s had 14in wheels. Am I screwed on the disk brake swap if I use 14s? Here's the wheel covers I'm hoping to use.
Jeff.P_46
Stock Mustang 2/Pinto rotors are 9.25", you might be able to use those?. I would go up to 15" and just get a tire with the same diameter as the ones on the 14". Here's a link to a great tire calculator.http://www.1010tires.com/TireSizeCalculator.asp Jeff
Young Ed
The original plan was for 15" or even 16" wheels until I decided I like the look of these 57 ply wheel covers.
Plymouthy Adams
I would not think you to be screwed..the donor rotors from a Volare are for 14inch rims..the main difference is the offset for clearing the calipers..you will only have to use the correct modern wheel for disc application. Earlier A-bodies used a 4" pattern so be careful there if you go to far back as the spindles are the same I understand.
Young Ed
Thanks Tim. How do you get say a volare disk brake to mate up with the truck spindles? I know Charlie makes an adaptor for them but I am assuming thats for 15" wheels.
Plymouthy Adams
Ed..I think I over shot the "pickup" word...however Charlie would be the man to inquire for sure. However..rim for rim the same offset would be needed...the assembly of the wheel is such that they have a very close/smooth profile on the inner surface. Young Ed
I'm hoping he'll chime in here. I could also maybe try those drilled drums that someone posted. That did sound interesting.
Young Ed
OK Charlie and I have been discussing this off group. He very nicely tried a 14" volare wheel on his disks and it fit just fine. So do these 57 caps fit volare wheels? And will a truck intended for 16"s look clownish with 14"s?
