55 Fargo Posted March 16, 2009 Report Posted March 16, 2009 Hi all, I occasionally use JB weld for some fixin. Today I decided to try and JB Weld the end piece that broke off my long fender whisker trim. Being pot metal, I think it's possible to be soldered with a special solder, but tried the JB Weld fix. I made a jig to clamp the trim piece into position, then Jbwelded the edges on trim, and clamped together, it is now curing. I will see how it is in the morning, this doesn't have to be super structually strong, just enough to hold the last 6 inches of trim to the main trim, not sure if this will work or not, but will find out. I broke this trim a few years ago, it was in decent shape, and never did get a good replacement, and their not cheap to buy. I also broke a park light lense once, hard lessons, oh yeah burnt the back seattoo, but that needed recovering anyway.....LOL Quote
Joe Flanagan Posted March 16, 2009 Report Posted March 16, 2009 I know that when that stuff sets up it's as strong as heck. Depends on whether it adheres to that surface. If not, you can just take it off with a dremel tool and try something else. I set my car on fire twice. I was welding and some of the sparks jumped over into the old loose insulation. Luckily it didn't get too far. You think I would have learned my lesson after the first incident. No. I had to go through it twice before I cleaned all the old insulation out of the car. Quote
BobT-47P15 Posted March 16, 2009 Report Posted March 16, 2009 Fred, is your trim piece such that you can also use a piece of metal to bridge the joined area on the back side---to strengthen the joint further. Hope this comment makes sense. Quote
JIPJOBXX Posted March 16, 2009 Report Posted March 16, 2009 I used some of this stuff on my trim and it worked. Quote
billwillard Posted March 16, 2009 Report Posted March 16, 2009 Cut a grove in it about 1" or londer on each side if the brake. Lay a piece if tubing like small brake line in the grove along with the JB Quote
55 Fargo Posted March 16, 2009 Author Report Posted March 16, 2009 Hi all, my JB weld did not hold, I need to as some of have said need some type of reinforcement like a metal tube or strip. I will try again when I have more time, where there is a will there is a way...Fred Quote
RobertKB Posted March 17, 2009 Report Posted March 17, 2009 Fred, too bad it did not work. I am sure, however, that you will find a solution using "old car determination". I have had varying degress of success with JB Weld, usually good. It is a product I like and use when necessary. Good luck with your repair. Quote
