brian hood
I feel stupid, but I have got to ask. When setting the timing on a distributor that has been removed, can some one give me the procedure. Dont you bring it up on Compression for the number one cylinder. Then what ever position the rotor is pointing is where the first plug wire goes? It keeps back-firing through the carb. I am ready to scream!!!! Help!!!! steveplym
Try to static time it first. I did it for my car and it worked out great after many failures at starting the first time. http://www40.addr.com/~merc583/mopar/framesets/techtipframeset.html
Niel Hoback
Thats a good starting place. The rotor should be pointing about 7 o'clock. Did you put your finger over the spark plug hole to make sure it was coming up on compression? If so, then yes, the wire that the rotor is pointing to becomes number one. Clockwise around its 153624. brian hood
I am not working on a Chrysler engine. Its a Ford 302. The dist turns CCW.
steveplym
Whoops, I wondered if you had a different engine you were talking about. Well figure out which spark plug wire is #1 on the distributor and you could do pretty much the same kind of static timing test. Set #1 piston to TDC and get to rotor to point to the #1 plug wire and go from there.
Niel Hoback
If you're working on a brand X, then I don't know nuthin bout it. Yer on yer own.
greg g
once you establish your static timing is correct then you need to assure your firing order is correct through the wires both on the dist cap and the plugs.
moparalltheway
Sounds 180 out.
grey beard
Also, remember that the firing order must be in the right DIRECTION from number one. I've seen some pretty good men walk away from engines they could not get running, even with the correct firing order on the cap, just because they went around the cap in the wrong direction. If your distributor rotor turns CCW, then fstarting rom number one, your plug wire firing order must progress in a CCW direction, as well. By the way, does CW or CCW refer to the view you and I have of a clock's face, or the clock's own view of his own face? I always wondered about that sort of stuff, and often lay awake at night, just pondering such esoteric trivia.
stellarrestorations
Ford is 1-2-3-4 on the right bank, and 5-6-7-8 on the left bank.
