greg g Posted February 5, 2009 Report Posted February 5, 2009 If you are goinf to run signals, you need ot swap the light hardware out. You can get the dual filiment inserts and pig tails that fit into the sockets. These are available at any parts store. both front and rear will need to be changed. then new wires run for hte new circuits. The original wiring supports the running lights on the front, which go off when the headlamps are turned on. And the rear outer marker lamps. The lamp in the ceter of the trunk lid was the original brake light. ( yes one center mounted brake light and two outer runing lights) The rear lights are on with parking lams and headlamps. I currently have auxiliary lights mounted for rear signals( amber lamps from a Motor cycle) and have wired the 3 stock lamps for stop and the two outer for running lights. At the front the park lamps are fitted with dual filement lamps and sockets and support park and turn signal. Quote
blueskies Posted February 5, 2009 Report Posted February 5, 2009 Here's a shot of the fillament inserts Greg mentioned. I bought these at a truck stop for my '50. These lights on my car were park lights, no signals. Hit reload on your browser if the images don't show... I re-used the sockets that were on the car. The only issue with this is that standard 1157 bulbs have staggered pins so that they can't be insterted backwards, and they won't fit into the single fillament bulb sockets. You can, however, still buy dual fillament bulbs with non-staggered pins. You just have to put them in correctly, or the wrong fillament will come on. Here is a scan of the wiring diagram that came with my El-Cheapo turn signal unit. Not that the wires #3 and #4 are mis-labled... Pete Quote
Young Ed Posted February 5, 2009 Report Posted February 5, 2009 Those wiring inserts are available at napa also. The wiring is a little light duty for 6v applications so per Merles suggestion I made my connection as close to the socket as I could and am not worrying about the few inches of light duty wire. Hounddog Posted February 5, 2009 Author Report Posted February 5, 2009 So when I replace those filaments one wire will still go to the post but the other to the turn signal. The back lights are duel filaments already so I wonder if they started to update the car but never finished? Quote

The rear sockets were dual fillament already because they are tail lights and brake lights. The brake circut will be used for the turn signals. Pete Quote
