aero3113 Posted January 27, 2009 Report Posted January 27, 2009 When I start my car in cold weather it wants to stall if I do not keep giving it a little gas until it warms up. Do you guys think this is a choke adjustment? Quote
greg g Posted January 27, 2009 Report Posted January 27, 2009 choke and is your heat riser operative. Quote
RobertKB Posted January 27, 2009 Report Posted January 27, 2009 Probably choke and/or carb adjustment. As Greg said, check your heat riser too. One of my cars is like that and I don't worry much about it. Within a minute she is good to go. Quote
aero3113 Posted January 28, 2009 Author Report Posted January 28, 2009 ok , I know that my heat riser is not working but I think it is mostly the choke. It is not closing to the right position. And I remember one day I closed it by hand and the car ran smoother while warming up. I tried to adjust it and it still would not close to the correct position. I used a drill bit in the adjusting hole.Maybe I am not adjusting it correctly, when cold should it be closed all the way? Quote
DonaldSmith Posted January 28, 2009 Report Posted January 28, 2009 Do you have a choke "pot" that sits on the manifold? When the manifold is cold, the bimetallic spring closes the choke only half way. When you crank the starter, a solenoid is supposed to close the choke all the way. After you finish cranking, the solenoid releases. As the manifold warms up, the choke opens all the way. Quote
aero3113 Posted January 28, 2009 Author Report Posted January 28, 2009 So when I am done cranking it will be half way until it warms up. Maybe it is adjusted correctly and it is mostly my heat riser. About the carb settings what is a good start off point on the needle. I have a carter ball and ball Quote
Norm's Coupe Posted January 28, 2009 Report Posted January 28, 2009 So when I am done cranking it will be half way until it warms up. Maybe it is adjusted correctly and it is mostly my heat riser. About the carb settings what is a good start off point on the needle. I have a carter ball and ball About 1 1/2 turns out, then adjust from there after the engine is at operating temperature. Even if the heat riser is messed up, you should be able to keep the car running when cold. You would just need to leave the choke pulled out a little until the car warmed up, with the heat riser being frozen. Once it's warmed up, push the choke all the way back in. Quote
DonaldSmith Posted January 28, 2009 Report Posted January 28, 2009 Aero, jump a hot wire to the pot. (Maybe disconnect the present wire from pot, so it won't do something screwy, like trying to crank the engine. The starter solenoid has a contact, to power the choke pot while the starter is cranking.) When you jump a hot wire to the pot, the arm and link to the choke plate should move, and move the choke plate maybe half way. If the circuit from the starter solenoid is not working, the choke is not getting the last half of its movement. I just wanted to say, good luck, we're all counting on you. Quote
