Frank Elder Posted January 22, 2009 Report Posted January 22, 2009 Let's just start this out with a clarifier, this is not about disc vs drum. Would like to know if it is possible to upgrade to Modern brakes internally, and still retain your stock drum "Look" on the outside.Stock MC would still be in the mix. This would eliminate a few headaches including parts hassle and the need for the brake tool. Stopping power would be better than stock. You know, kinda like looking at a dizzy and not knowing the pertronics or dual points upgrade inside has been installed. Ideas of what donors will work are greatly appreciated:) Quote
Young Ed Posted January 22, 2009 Report Posted January 22, 2009 Somewhere on here I saw a picture of someone who had more modern self adjusting rear brakes on their same rear axle. Im not sure which drum they used though. Quote
Young Ed Posted January 22, 2009 Report Posted January 22, 2009 http://www430.pair.com/p15d24/mopar_forum/showthread.php?t=7811&highlight=mustang+brakes here you go looks like it does use the mopar drums. FYI those drum brakes look just like my 94 dakota ones too so you might be able to use those too. Quote
Frank Elder Posted January 22, 2009 Author Report Posted January 22, 2009 Thanks Ed, that's a start! I want to do the fronts also, and would like to stick with mopar if possible...but, if it isn't mopar I can live with that. Should mention this now, I want to keep the existing stock rearend. No transplants. Don't want much, do I:D Quote
Normspeed Posted January 22, 2009 Report Posted January 22, 2009 That's a nice conversion. Looks stock from the outside and has the available parts and affordable prices of the more modern stuff. I changed my P24 rears to Dodge 11 inch brakes and that really helped, but I'm going to keep that conversion info for future reference. Quote
Young Ed Posted January 22, 2009 Report Posted January 22, 2009 Frankie I think those brakes were designed by an outside supplier and bought by a lot of the car makers. I don't have a pic but my dakota looks very similar if not the same. The fronts might be a little harder because there are bolts that hold the wheel cylinders that also hold parts of the front suspension on. Quote
Niel Hoback Posted January 22, 2009 Report Posted January 22, 2009 I recall someone on here used older Mustang brakes on the rear with very little work. I think he redrilled the backing plate mount holes and changed the outer edge to avoid hitting the drum edge? Quote
Normspeed Posted January 23, 2009 Report Posted January 23, 2009 Niel, I think that's the link that Young Ed posted. Looks like a nice setup Self centering brakes, no need for the Ammco tool, yay! Quote
