55 Fargo Posted January 11, 2009 Report Posted January 11, 2009 What about not attaching the carport to an existing structure, calling it a portable car port, I can't believe some city ordinace won't allow simple add-ons, or sheds with a wood floor, whats next piles and a grade beam for the dog house. How about a zoning variance, sure sounds like this municipal government is downright rigid and needs to be called on the carpet....Fred Quote

PatS.... Posted January 11, 2009 Report Posted January 11, 2009 Carports are allowed here if they meet code which is just so they don't fall down or drain onto the neighbors property. In some areas attached garages are not allowed if you already have separate garage. One former neighbor got a permit to build a carport, and did one year. Next year, without permits, he filled in the front with a stucco wall which matched the house. Nobody complained. Next year he filled in the side wall and sided it with stucco, and nobody complained. The next year he built the last wall for the door but didn't put the door in. Nobody complained. That fall he had the door installed and he's had a nice attached garage for 20+ years. Nobody complained. Sometimes ya just gotta do what you gotta do Those portable car tents are allowed here and are used quite a bit to hide a non runner or parts car which isn't allowed as of last year. Actually any outbuilding without a permanent foundation like garden sheds don't need any permission or permits. Many people are using that law to haul those UGLY shipping containers onto their yards, now those things are ugly! Maybe throw some siding on or something but nobody does...ugh Quote
Norm's Coupe Posted January 11, 2009 Author Report Posted January 11, 2009 Where's that Dairyland meet again? Oconomowoc, WI. Just get on I-94 and take it through Milwaukee and keep going about 30 or 35 miles west of Milwaukee and you'll see the signs. It's right off I-94W. Thanks Bill for the words about the coupe. Not sure if I'll make it out there or not. Will have to wait until it gets closer to see. I'm not sure about here, but my son lives in a suburb next to Milwaukee. He can use the tent, but it can't stay up all year. If it does, he needs a permit for it too. So.........I probably would too. I know the burb next to me made a guy take down his tent after it was up for a couple of years. Plus, I have no room for a tent either. Would mess up the looks of the yard. Wife and I wouldn't want to see that either. Pat, I've seen people put house additions on like that. But........here's one for you. The city gave a guy permission to build a garage on his lot in a new area. So.........the guy built his garage. Later the city decided to put a road through there. Well..........the garage was now too close to the road. So.....they said even though the garage had a permit, it had to now be moved. However, since it was their fault, they did pay him to move it. Point is though, it doesn't matter if you build it without a permit. If they find it, they will make you take it down. You can't even put in a gravel parking space here. Has to be asphalt or concrete. Quote
Norm's Coupe Posted January 13, 2009 Author Report Posted January 13, 2009 I may have found something here. Little newer than I was thinking but none the less it's old enough. And, these are neat if in good shape. Waiting for the owner to contact me back on it. If it looks and runs as good as the picture and description in person, I may just have 4 cars to contend with for awhile. Quote

blueskies Posted January 13, 2009 Report Posted January 13, 2009 Thats too bad Don. The 2 little old ladies who owned the car before us didn't drive it and Norm would be perfect to pick up where they left off. Now that right there is funny... LOL Pete Quote
Young Ed Posted January 13, 2009 Report Posted January 13, 2009 Thanks Pete I was rather proud of that one myself and everyone else seems to have left it alone. That 64 had 28K miles on it when we got it. After driving it to detroit it has about 32K Quote
Norm's Coupe Posted January 13, 2009 Author Report Posted January 13, 2009 Norm;If that is the one on the bay a guy I work with wants it too. Don, No, it's not on the bay, it's local. Just got off the phone with the owner. Still sounds like a good deal. Said he bought it about 2 years ago and brought it home from Arizona, from the original owner. Has the small V8 and runs great. So.......I will be taking a ride soon to look at it. Not this week though. We're in the deep freeze right now with temps around zero and below and wind chills down in the minus 20's through the weekend. So told him I'd call him back the beginning of the week for a look and test drive. He did say if someone else called, I'd have first dibs and would call me to let know before selling it to anyone else. That said, the owner is looking for a quick sale. Said his house was foreclosed on and won't have a place to keep it after the first week of February when he moves into an apartment. So.........even if I wasn't interested, the guy you work with probably wouldn't have time to swing a deal by the end of the month. Quote
Don Coatney Posted January 13, 2009 Report Posted January 13, 2009 Norm; If you do not buy it let me know. Quote
55 Fargo Posted January 13, 2009 Report Posted January 13, 2009 [ We're in the deep freeze right now with temps around zero and below and wind chills down in the minus 20's through the weekend. Norm in Manitoba Canada we go out to the lake, snowmobiling, take strolls outdoors, go sledding and skating at 0 farenheit:D . But the -20s windchill does not sound like fun, it hit -30:eek: here last night with no wind, now that was crisp as I walked my son to the school bus at the end of our driveway. Heck 2 years ago I pulled a distributor out of a parts car for Coatney at -15 f:rolleyes: , actually that wasn't much fun, but I know Don needed it Quote
Norm's Coupe Posted January 13, 2009 Author Report Posted January 13, 2009 Norm;If you do not buy it let me know. Don, I'll let you know, but like I said, he'd have to act fast. Don't know how the guy would get rid of it that fast, but where's he going to store it. So.....he could end up taking it to somewhere like CarMax if no one buys it fast enough. Fred, I don't mind temps around zero if the wind isn't howling. Like you said zero isn't all that bad without the wind. That said. I'm still not going to go out and look at an old car at those temps. That can wait until it's at least around 15 or 20 degrees. This cold snap is supposed to end this weekend. Quote

Hi Norm, I was only joking;) , yes the cold sucks it's this cold. It's supposed to be warmer here by the weekend to, but highs of about 10 to 15. Today, My almost 3 yo Daughter and I went to town, to pick up bat cables, it was about -25 at the time, but no wind, my 2005 Caravan warms up good, my Little Girl was content, all bundled up watching Stuart Littlle on DVD in the van. But when it's this cold I am always a little nervous, cuz things mechanical like to fail at very sub-zero temps. Hope all goes well in this potential car purchase for you. Quote
