krodaddy Posted December 30, 2008 Report Posted December 30, 2008 I'm ready to start getting some parts for my engine. Pistons, bearings, gasket set, etc. What do ya'll think about these vendors? NAPA, Bernbaum, ( probably don't need to ask) Kanter, Roberts. Let's here some of your experiances dealing with them. Also any other place you think I should consider dealing with. Barry Quote
moparalltheway Posted December 30, 2008 Report Posted December 30, 2008 I would say NAPA or Orielly. The others probably get there parts from the same vendors. I would say it all comes from the same source. We are not talking about s.b. chevs I hope. Mega Vendors. I have had good luck with best gasket in CA. Good product nice price. I have used them many times for early Hemi rebuilds. Quote
JohnS48plm Posted December 30, 2008 Report Posted December 30, 2008 I got my engine parts from Terrill Machine in Texas. They had everything I needed and were helpful on the phone. I would use them again. JohnS Quote
krodaddy Posted December 30, 2008 Author Report Posted December 30, 2008 All right, thats what I'm after! Let's hear some more. Quote
steveplym Posted December 30, 2008 Report Posted December 30, 2008 I ordered my parts from Roberts and Kanter. I didn't have any problems in dealing with either one. Parts were good quality and I was happy with my purchase. Like John S I did call Terrell machine to inquire about some parts and they were very helpful, but I ended up purchasing them thru Kanter instead. Only vendor I've had any problems with at all is Bernbaum, and mostly because he can be a grouch on the phone. Quote
48mirage Posted December 30, 2008 Report Posted December 30, 2008 Don't forget www.rockauto.com again probably the same suppliers as the other majors but might save you a $ or two. Quote
'37 P4 Touring Posted December 30, 2008 Report Posted December 30, 2008 Egge in California will have it all. If not, they will make it. My machine shop got the parts for my engine from them. Here is a link: http://www.egge.com/about.shtml Good Luck, Jim in Columbia All right, thats what I'm after! Let's hear some more. Quote
Joe Flanagan Posted December 30, 2008 Report Posted December 30, 2008 I went with Vintage Power Wagons with my rebuild. They're very knowledgeable and will take the time to talk to you on the phone. They have an extensive catalogue and the guys also work on flatheads so they're not just salespeople. I was very happy with them. I got oversized pistons, rings, head gasket, valves, gasket set, camshaft, all bearings, etc. from them. Quote
Don Coatney Posted December 30, 2008 Report Posted December 30, 2008 Best to have the machine shop that does the machine work on your engine order the bearings, pistons, rings, etc to insure you get what you need. I personally would never order a "kit" as there are to many variables. Your crankshaft main bearings could be 5 under and piston rod bearings 10 under while your pistons and rings could be 30 over. Buy the correct parts and buy them only once and save money. The price you pay a machine shop to get the right parts for you will be a bargain in the long run. Quote
Young Ed Posted December 30, 2008 Report Posted December 30, 2008 Agreed Don. Even when Dad and I were doing all the reassembly on a flathead the shop still supplied all the parts. Quote
norrism1 Posted December 30, 2008 Report Posted December 30, 2008 Mine where TRW brand parts thru the auto shop that did the machining. Quote
Jim Yergin Posted December 30, 2008 Report Posted December 30, 2008 Like Joe, I had good luck with Vintage Power Wagons as well as with eBay. Len Dawson at Deception Pass Motors can also be a good source. I waited for the shop doing the machine work to tell me what I needed then I located the parts. Jim Yergin Quote
krodaddy Posted December 31, 2008 Author Report Posted December 31, 2008 Going to bring the block to the machinist on monday to get bored and new pistons fitted. Need to take a good look at the crankshaft tomorrow and if it needs work I'll let the shop source the bearings. Everything else I can handle myself so I"ll be contacting some of the vendors you all have suggested. I have been checking prices online for various parts and have found some very different pricing on the same items. Main bearings $164 at NAPA, $84 at Kanter, and $50 at Roberts. Guess I'll have to do a little more research. Thanks for all the responces. Barry Quote
james curl Posted December 31, 2008 Report Posted December 31, 2008 I got all of my parts from Terrell Machine here in Texas. I had the machine shop mic the crank to determine what size bearings would be required then ordered every thing and gave it to the machine shop so that they could size all the surfaces as required. The machine shop told me that they prefered that I supply them all of the replaceable parts so that they did not have to try to find them. Quote
Joe Flanagan Posted December 31, 2008 Report Posted December 31, 2008 That's what I did. My machine shop measured the rod and bearing journals, etc. and then told me what size bearings to get. Seems like a long time ago. Now the thing is sitting assembled in my garage with plenty of assembly lube. I hope to be dropping it in place this spring. Quote
