48WingNut Posted January 2, 2007 Report Posted January 2, 2007 My vaccum wipers on my 48 1 ton aren't working properly. They go up when you turn the switch on and then stay there until you turn the switch off and they go down. They don't go all the time. Plus they go really slow. Any ideas as where to start? Any info would be greatly appreciated. 48WN Quote
Mike 1948 1Ton Posted January 3, 2007 Report Posted January 3, 2007 Hey Kevin, Assuming you have vacum from the engin, look at a good cleaning of the wiper motor. It is pretty simple to take apart, but be careful as there are some small parts. I think there was a tech page on the old site or on the P15-D24 site that showed how to do this. I used WD-40 as a cleaner and it worked good at cutting the old grease inside the wiper motor. Also make sure the wiper arms are connected to the motor correctly, because if they are not on there right it could bind when trying to go back and forth. If you have some movement now, all you may need is a good cleaning to get it working smooth again. After this, the wipers will work better at idle speed or constant road speed as engin vacum will be steady at these times, they will not be as responsive under excelleration as engin vacume is low. Hope this helps, Mike Quote
48WingNut Posted January 3, 2007 Author Report Posted January 3, 2007 Thanx Mike.......i'll check that out and see what happens. 48WN Quote
Steven Hood Posted January 3, 2007 Report Posted January 3, 2007 If you need parts, or need someone to rebuild them for you, try this guy...http://www.wiperman.com/ . I know many people on the Power Wagon site that have used him and he does an excellent job. Quote
48WingNut Posted January 3, 2007 Author Report Posted January 3, 2007 Thanx Steve! I'll keep him in mind. 48WN Quote
MBF Posted January 3, 2007 Report Posted January 3, 2007 Make sure the actuating arms going to each pivot are corrected to the bar on the the vacuum motor properly-been there-done that! On my 49 when they're parked (off) they are on the outer sides of the windshields. Mike Quote
48WingNut Posted January 3, 2007 Author Report Posted January 3, 2007 I guess i'm not sure where "parked" is on the switch. Right now they are up in the center of the winshield. But if I turn the switch they go down and stay there. Is the motor easy to get out? Haven't had much time to look at it yet. 48WN Quote
Vintrader Posted January 4, 2007 Report Posted January 4, 2007 On my 51, they rest at the bottom of the winsheld. No matter where they are in the cycle when you turn them off. They return to the bottom of the winsheld. Is this correct? Dutch Quote
MBF Posted January 4, 2007 Report Posted January 4, 2007 The motor should come out by removing the two large phillips headed screws found at the center top of the dash. You'll need to remove the actuating arms and the linkage for the switch too. I'll try to take some pics over the weekend of how the arms are connected to the pivot arm on the motor. Mike Quote
Merle Coggins Posted January 4, 2007 Report Posted January 4, 2007 On my 51, they rest at the bottom of the winsheld. No matter where they are in the cycle when you turn them off. They return to the bottom of the winsheld. Is this correct? Dutch I believe this came up a while back, and the consensus was that 48-50 wipers park at the center bar and 51-53 park at the bottom. Mike 1948 1Ton Posted January 4, 2007 Report Posted January 4, 2007 If you remove the radio speaker the access to the motor is much easier. Mike Quote
Mario Loya B1B Posted January 4, 2007 Report Posted January 4, 2007 Merle, I'm not sure of the correct parking position for my 49 wipers, but after many attempts to try to get them to settle flat, I accepted the center as the resting postion. The wipers work quite well after the wiperman rebuild. I strongly recommend him. He is resonably priced and as a bonus, included the rubber mounts, small clips and spring that hold the wipers arms to the motor. I wish I had thought about removing the speaker before installing the wiper motor, that would have made things easier. Quote
48WingNut Posted January 4, 2007 Author Report Posted January 4, 2007 Thanx a bunch for all your suggestions. I'm sure it will make it much easier to pull out when the time comes. Hopefully in the next few days. Thanx again for all your helps. 48WN Quote
48WingNut Posted January 6, 2007 Author Report Posted January 6, 2007 Shaaazzzzzzam! Took the wiper motor off this morning. Gave it a good cleaning and that didn't help. So the "I wonder how this works" in me decided to investigate further. After removing the cap on the top of the motor I found a shaft with a spring with a fiber "thingy" on the end of it. Under that was a little gear of some sort. After working the motor a few times I figured out that gear wasn't moving all the way over the hole to create a vaccum to make the wipers return to "park" (which is up). So I sprayed some WD-40 in there and worked it a few times and blew it out. And sprayed it again and it works just fine. Let it rain! Well sprinkle. LOL. Anyways thank for all your help! 48WN Quote
Byronb3b Posted January 6, 2007 Report Posted January 6, 2007 Oiling the linkage can help too, mine has electric wipers and would not work until I oiled the linkage and wiper posts, remove the screw at the top of the posts and add a few drops of light engine oil, good luck Quote
JIPJOBXX Posted January 6, 2007 Report Posted January 6, 2007 Funny I'm having the same problem with my 60 T Bird and will haft to take mine also out. It basically the same wipper motor so I will look for that little shaft and gear. The only thing with the T bird is that it is a real truft position to get at but I guess I will just haft to get ready for a battle royal. Quote
Reg Evans Posted January 7, 2007 Report Posted January 7, 2007 I believe this came up a while back, and the consensus was that 48-50 wipers park at the center bar and 51-53 park at the bottom. Merle If you look at photos of the 48-50's in the photos section you'll see that the wiper shafts are centered under each windshield. The 51-53's are way out towards the edges so the blades can rest all the way down on the bottom of the windshield. Quote
48WingNut Posted January 7, 2007 Author Report Posted January 7, 2007 So I guess I need to remove the wiper blades and arms and put them in the bottom position when they are in park. Will check it out and see if it's possible. 48WN Quote
48WingNut Posted January 7, 2007 Author Report Posted January 7, 2007 Hmmmmmm.......i'm really confused now. I just recieved my "Dodge B-Series Trucks" book yesterday afternoon. It's a great book and you can pick it up on Amazon.com's website cheap. I paid $2.99 plus shipping. Anyway I looked at the pic to see where the wipers are parked at and they are in the down position. Now what I don't understand is if I remove the wiper blade arms and put them in the down position when parked, when I turn them on the first place they will want to go is down even further. I guess the only thing I can think of is maybe the wiper motor got swapped out at some time (but doesn't look like it did), and that is why it does what it does? Any suggestions? 48WN Quote
48WingNut Posted June 18, 2007 Author Report Posted June 18, 2007 Well after a few months I finally crawled under the dash again and switched the wiper arms from one post to the other. Wah Lah! They are now parked in the down position. I guess sometime along the line somebody worked on them and hooked them back up wrong. A simple fix. I wish all fixes were that simple! Quote
