How do you guys pronounce Led Zeppelin?

We just say it "Zeplin", and at 3:00 AM, while listening to their music, after a hard night of partying, who can hardly talk, let alone spell.

Well maybe that was me 25 years ago.........Fred

Did you hear any good Zed Zed Top music in Buffalo?

Don, we are even known to catch a few Zees up here once in awhile.

Zed Zed Top, say that backwards a few times.

Well since all you linguists have torn the word coupe apart I guess we should start on DeLuxe - or is it Delux? Deluxe? Just curious.

All I know is that if "deluxe" against ya, get out of Vegas quick! :)

Don - I'll cite only my '41 De Soto as an example on this one; the factory literature and the (expensive) little scripts that go on hood side-panels read:

"De Luxe" . The French origin ( as Greg pointed-out ) would have it as two words: "de Luxe", "de" being the article, and "Luxe" being the adjective(?).

The French pronunciation would be: " duh-LOOKS "

Somewhere along the way, MadisonAve (the marketing folks) or maybe the folks who designed sidescripts made it one word, "deluxe".

Once again, I think the "correct" spelling / pronunciation should probably be guided by one's immediate circumstances / surroundings... ;)

Tim Frank - Thanks for that info - I am copying that into my Outlook!

(I had forgotten the names of all those accents; haven't had to call upon that knowledge since my jr. high-school French classes ! :D )

Merle - That's a great little poem ! Thanks for sharing !

"Hi all, I was wondering, do they pronounce sedan in parts of the South as see dan, I have heard this in some movies, "White Lightning" being noteworthy, they say the word see dan for sedan quite a bit, I have only heard in the North seh dan, kinda like, "see dan", sorta like pole leese for police."

Fred - I don't think it's strictly limited to the Deep South, but is probably also common in rural areas across the US... I have heard "SEE-dan",

"TEE-vee", "IN-surance", and similar variants in the mid-south (Virginia), Deep South, and from folks hailing from Missouri, just to name a few. Have also heard similar EM-phasis from native Pennsylvanians and rural NY-staters...

I think the prevalence of mass-media is slowly eating away at regional dialects though...

God bless you folks up there in Canadia  ; you got "Zed" from the Brits and "ce-LEE-ka" from the French ?

And a Chevy truck is pronounced "Maple Leaf" ? ;)

I think it was in a Calvin & Hobbes cartoon that after some "failure to communicate" with his mother, Calvin remarked: "We both speak English, but we're not talking the same language..."

Cheers !

De Soto Frank

No but I've seen them live here in Florida and once in Cali with Normspeed. You do remember that night don't ya Norm. Plus we see Billy F. Gibbons ALMOST every year at the LA Roadsters show, except of course this year when I had a really great concert shot of him blown up for him to autograph. Of course this year they were on tour in GA and the east coast that weekend.
