1949P17BC Posted October 14, 2008 Report Posted October 14, 2008 Quick History lesson, about 2 years ago i bought Tim Serbus;s motor out of his 47, needless to say it needed a complete rebuild. so the rebuild is done, 30 over, 50 off the head, deck, blocked, ported, George Asche Twins. Its going into my 47 Sedan. Now the real question, it has an external oil filter, no markings, with no evident way of opening and changing the filter. Quote
Jerry Roberts Posted October 14, 2008 Report Posted October 14, 2008 Those sealed throw-away canisters are scarce and expensive , so throw it away and put on a canister and replace the element . I see lots of canisters at every swap meet . Ebay has them too but they can be expensive there . Quote
claybill Posted October 14, 2008 Report Posted October 14, 2008 these were throw away canisters...you have to buy a new cannister. usually 25.00 ! good luck. i have a couple new ones!! i changed mine to a unit with a changeable filter insu=ide. i thnk many ply owners have done so...just get the newer style unit...$25. also..but easier. someone on forum will have one. bill Quote
oldmopar Posted October 14, 2008 Report Posted October 14, 2008 You can also buy a adapter for a spin on filter. I forget who has them maybe speedway Quote
steveplym Posted October 14, 2008 Report Posted October 14, 2008 I had a throw away type filter too and I ended up getting a canister type from Christopher on this forum. Sure is a lot cheaper to do an oil change and a bit less messy. Don't have to unhook the lines from the filter anymore. I do have an extra I'd sell you cheap. PM me if interested. Quote
oldmopar Posted October 14, 2008 Report Posted October 14, 2008 The canister on my p15 has a nice option a drain plug at the bottom of the canister sure beats the turkey baster Quote
BobT-47P15 Posted October 14, 2008 Report Posted October 14, 2008 Some days it's even tough to find a good turkey baster. Bought one from an "everything's a dollar" store.....wasn't so hot. Quote
Don Jordan Posted October 15, 2008 Report Posted October 15, 2008 I was at a parts store and found 2 of the big filters for $35 @. I'm not sure why but I bought them both. As soon as I use them I'm going to change over to a canister type. I'm not sure what was stock and what was not but my 47 has a canister and the 48 has the big filter. Remember the Fram filters where you put a roll of toilet paper in? That was the good old days. Quote
captden29 Posted October 15, 2008 Report Posted October 15, 2008 wish mine had a drain. i use the turkey baster and then stuff old rags in to soak up the rest. i put a wire tie on the baster where the bulb meets the tube and my $1 tool works great. dennis Quote
Don Coatney Posted October 15, 2008 Report Posted October 15, 2008 put the plug in without cross threading it before oil ended up on the floor. Do like I did. Go to the bubble pack store and ask the counter girl for a pet cock. Quote
Don Jordan Posted October 16, 2008 Report Posted October 16, 2008 now you know full well that we can't let that pass. When you bring up the topic of pet cocks Of course we shouldn't be cruel to chickens. Quote
