socalkevin07 Posted October 9, 2008 Report Posted October 9, 2008 well have my 52 on ebay..and trying to tune it up for the new buyer..and ran into problems. Initially I thought it was running rough because of bad igniton wires, so I replaced them. Still running rough.. Thought it was carb so replaced it with known good one..still runs the same. Ok Question for the pros: I've probably put a whole 10 miles on it since the rebuild..Am I suppose to adjust the valves right away? retorque the head? would either of these make it "all of a sudden" run so rough? Even backfired once and when I push on accelerator pedal nothing...just wont rev up at all and engine seems to run very rough. I'm at a loss and really cannot afford to put anything more into it..I just lowered the selling price on ebay because I feel terrible..Some advice would be much appreciated. thanks Quote
Reg Evans Posted October 9, 2008 Report Posted October 9, 2008 I would give it a compression test first to make sure all the cylinders are sealing correctly. If you haven't re-torqued the head after the initial startup maybe the head gasket blew. If that all checks out OK look for vacuum leaks and check the timing, carb, and fuel delivery again. Sorry you have to sell. This lousy economy has me in the same boat you are in. I'm a custom home builder and my phone stopped ringing last November. Quote
chucky07 Posted October 9, 2008 Report Posted October 9, 2008 thanks reg..well been working on it..put new points and condensor..and chcked wires in dist..all good no shorts...still runs rough and cuts out when i give gas..just now it backfired and a white cloud came out of carb....It's so strange cuz it was running good...parked it..next day this terrible running business..can't figure it out..have gas to carb..spark from dist... i'll check head bolts for proper torq...any other ideas before i go crzy.? i already lowered the selling price becuase of this.. thx Quote
Merle Coggins Posted October 9, 2008 Report Posted October 9, 2008 Might want to recheck the timing. Or look for a vaccume leak. Just a thought, Merle Quote
chucky07 Posted October 9, 2008 Report Posted October 9, 2008 checkd timing..good..it starts with one push of starter button but runs very rough..barely idles..and when i give gas it doesnt rev up just sputters...i tried diff carb..same thing..Since it did this just all of a sudden..after i parked it then ran this way..i'm wondering if the coil went bad? (new coil).. Quote
Fernando Mendes Posted October 9, 2008 Report Posted October 9, 2008 You have to check each valve stem & tappet clearance only this.Following the firing order 1-5-3-6-2-4 you have to put each piston in compression stroke(means two valves closed) and in this moment you can watch and turn with your finger the two tappets.Checked the piston number 1,turn clockwise 120 degrees(90+30) now you have the piston number 5 in compression stroke, turn again 120 degrees now you have the piston number 3,turn more 120 degrees you have the piston number 6 in compression stroke, same with the piston number 2 and 4.Normally backfire is caused because the valve stem and tappet clearance are not adjusted.Good luck. billwillard Posted October 9, 2008 Report Posted October 9, 2008 Remove the vac advance line from the carb. Install a plug on the carb or hold your finger over the hole. If it runs ok replace the vac advance on the dis. Quote
chucky07 Posted October 11, 2008 Report Posted October 11, 2008 Might want to recheck the timing. Or look for a vaccume leak.Just a thought, Merle will a vacum leake say the carb base gasket for instance cause it to run terribly..no real power? and how bad would the leak have to be to cause such rough running? Merle Coggins Posted October 13, 2008 Report Posted October 13, 2008 Kevin, Did you get it running better before it sold? If so, what was the verdict? Merle Quote
brian hood Posted October 13, 2008 Report Posted October 13, 2008 You can check for a vac leak with the engine runnig and a can of carb cleaner. If the eng starts to run better when you spray it over an area you think might be leaking, then you have found your leak. Brian Quote
socalkevin07 Posted October 13, 2008 Author Report Posted October 13, 2008 Kevin, Did you get it running better before it sold? If so, what was the verdict? Merle well merle..I think i sold it tosomeone who knew alot more about the truck than he led me to believe It was still running terrible...when he got here to look at it....he had me start it and then he messed witht the screw on top of the carb the one to the passenger side (found only on fluid drive models) and he had it running perfect withing 2 minutes.I kinda wanted to keep it at that point. but it was for sale and he bought it. at least i learned a lesson..I shouldnt have give up ......oh well.. funny thing is..nobody in the forumn said anything about that screw on top of carb when i asked....my manual said its some kinda of dashpot and i still have no idea how that screw alone could have rendered my engine basically "useless" ...strange but true. kevin Quote
Merle Coggins Posted October 13, 2008 Report Posted October 13, 2008 You are correct. That is a dash pot. (see my post from a couple weeks ago on this topic. http://www430.pair.com/p15d24/mopar_forum/showthread.php?t=11669 ) I don't know how that could make the engine run rough. If anything it may cause it to not return to idle. Are you sure he didn't also tweak the idle mixture screw? Either way, I guess it's his problem now. Does the guy live close by? Maybe you'll get to see it out and about someday and know your hard work contributed to it's road worthiness. Merle Quote
socalkevin07 Posted October 13, 2008 Author Report Posted October 13, 2008 wish i would have seen that post..maybe it would have helped me..I spent many days and alot of money trying to figure out my engine running so rough........Itwas a simple adjustment on the carb..the only screw i didn't touch hahahaahha oh well...lesson learned.. thx Quote
