Needed please. Drivetrain. HELP!

Hum, this is one of those stories that I'm certain everyone can relate to.

I have a Plymouth buddy that lives close to the Ohio, Kentucky line. He bought (from eBay) a rolling 40 Plymouth four door sedan. After delivery, he found that there was absolutly no driveline what so ever.

Here is where we can all relate.

I do not know, nor could I count the times I have walked past these drivelines either for sale, or just trying to give them away! Now that I know someone that has a need, I simply can not find one!

I do have a tranny from a 40 Plymouth that could help him on his way, but I am not certain if it will simply "bolt up" to every flatty out there without any troubles.

So, heres the story. Anyone in a reasonable distance able to help?

He is going to need everything so I know that this is asking a lot, but you never know until you ask.

A few more details would help. Does the car have a bell housing, flywheel, clutch, linkages, transmission, driveshaft, differential, etc? The Kentucky-Ohio border is pretty long. Where is this car located? Where did the car come from etc?

The car has nothing!

Needs the whole ball of wax.

I can only think that the car was going to be a rod project that was torn down and then left. The steering is complete as I can remember, and the rear end is there, but nothing else.

He is located in KY, across the boarder from Cincinnati.

From time to time, I see someone wanting to simply give away a flathead

engine and other related parts. Falconvan of this forum, in St Louis, just

gave away a motor, bellhousing etc. Did have the standard trans left.

Then you get into the expense of shipping halfway across the country.

Surely there is someone within a couple hours drive of his location that

might have something. He needs to go to swapmeets and car shows to

inquire of other car people. Look on craigslist in your town and the area.

Check the shopper newspaper if you have one. Any old car collector

businesses around??

I have a 47 P-15 that has a rear end (still under car) and both front spindles complete (upper and lower A frames)with springs and drive shaft and a steering box with column and shifter. I live 6 miles south of the Ky border. My kin live in LaGrange and it takes about 2hrs to get there from here. Pretty much straight down I-65 to Smiths Grove then south about 45 minutes to my house, south on 31-E to westmoreland.

I don't know if the parts will fit or not, but someone else might chime in on it. Many extra parts, but they are for the 47 P-15 4dr. pm me if interested.

Thank you for your posting. I will forward this information on. I do think that the items you listed are currently with the car. The motor and tranny, plus the drive shaft are what he needs the most.

Thanks to you also for your input. He knows of the seller, and the cars drive line was or should I say has been missing for quite sometime. From what I understand of this eBay auction, my friend was a bit disappointed in the items that were "missing" from the car. Now he asks many more questions before bidding, and wants to know what he is getting into before buying.

All in all, this really is a solid sedan. Rust is minimal, and pretty much dent free. His wishes are to try to keep as original as possible.

I too, do not know what would be a head of him if he was to find a driveline from anything other than a P-10. I would hope that you guru's out there would be able to give your two cents worth when a motor and tranny are found.

Sounds like your freind needs to find a parts car. That's what I did after a few months of trying to scrounge around the want ads and ebay looking for the stuff I need. I have already saved a lot of $$ over what individual purchases would have cost me and there is still a lot of stuff I will be able to salvage.

Sorry but I won't be parting with any driveline parts untill my car is up and running. Hopefully by this time next year.

It depends on what he really wants to do. If he is looking for a 100% correct resto he needs a P10 engine. Otherwise any 23" flathead will fit. You need a proper bellhousing for the car which probably fits a few other years. Not sure how far that goes. A hollander book would probably tell you. The tranny for a 40 is shifted by cables instead of rods so that might be unique to 40-41. I think by 42 they went to the shift rods. The harder stuff to get right is all the little external stuff that is more car specific like shifting stuff clutch stuff throttle linkage etc

A correct P-10 motor and all would be fantastic, but he realizes that this is not really probable. So, that being said, he will accept any year motor tranny and bellhousing that will mate up with each other.

Any ideas what years will NOT work? And what he should stay away from?

I can try and remember to do some research with dads hollander book. You will find that these mopars are quite interchangeable. The 6cyl should fit 35-59. Just make sure its a dodge or plymouth one thats 23 in long. I wouldnt be surprised at all to find the bellhousing fits all through the 40s and early 50s. Only thing I know to stay away from are the 25in blocks and probably the automatic equiped engines from 54 on. They may have a crank not drilled for a pilot bushing.
