  1. Is anyone using synthetic oil? I have been using 30 weight non detergent oil in my car forever. Last year I started adding 1 qt. of detergent when I changed the oil. I finally made the full switch over to regular detergent oil but I also used 10w-30 synthetic. The first thing I noticed when I started the engine was instant oil pressure. It also seems to run a little quieter and some of the smoking from the tailpipes went away. So far I'm very happy with it. The downside is I need to change the leaking oil pan gasket because the thinner oil seems to drip a little more, but, I was going to do that anyway so I can clean out the pan.
  2. I picked up an oil pan gasket from napa today. The box says it fit's 1934-1960 chrysler 218 and 230's. Will this work on my 1938 plymouth 201??
  3. I did the PCV conversion yesterday, it was really simple and cost about $12. I had a rubber grommet and a pcv valve in my stash of junk. The grommet fit into the hole in the block perfect and I used a little silicone to hold it in. I bought a few fittings to make a tee. The only thing I didn't like was the idle got real rough with the pcv valve setup. I went to napa and bought new pcv valve that had a tighter plunger inside. That helped but the idle is still a little rough. It smooths right out if I pinch off the hose. I don't think I mind the rougher idle though, it sounds pretty good with dual exhaust and glasspacks.
  4. I did, and I also just noticed that it looks like the exact same spot that I am interested in. Stupid me.
  5. I'm trying to figure out an easy way to convert my 38 from the road draft tube to a pcv system. The only place that I can find that has a vacuum source (without drilling something) is in the manifold just below the carb where the vacuum wipers hook up. Would this be enough vacuum to work if I replaced the fitting with a "T". It looks like it's about 3/8's. It would be simple to do if this spot works and I don't think many people would notice it was done.
  6. I'd love to get the radial wide whites but I think the price they want is criminal. I have the wide white bias tires now and really want to try out a set of radials.
  7. Isn't $22 for powdercoating really cheap? Can you tell me what brand the tires are? I'm shopping for a set of radials that have a decent sized white wall. I don't want to spend big bucks for the repo wide whites.
  8. I''m trying to order or buy an oil pan gasket for my 38 with a 201. I was looking at Bernbaums and they show an "oil pan gasket set" that fits 33-59 plmouths and dodges. They also show an "oil seal front pan package" and a "rear main oil seal package". I just want to drop my pan to clean it out and then replace it, what set or sets do I need? If I go to a local napa store and order an oil pan gasket for a 59 plymouth it should work right? They usually don't have a listing back to 1938.
  9. Is it as simple as just adapting the stock lines to the adapter? I thought in order to make that work something had to be plugged in the block.
  10. The filter on my 38 is just a big can that doesn't come apart and it's not cheap to replace. Could I swap over to the type that has a replaceable filter inside like you have here?
  11. I'm looking for pictures of late 30's to early 40's mopars with fenderskirts and/or visors. 1938 plymouth P6 4doors would be ideal. I haven't had much luck searching the net and I'm curious what they would look like on my car. Thanks.
  12. My blaster is a benchtop cabinet setup. I'm going to harbor freight on Friday to pick up a new filter. I thought maybe my compressor was worn out or something since the oil was getting in the tank. Thanks for the info.
  13. I was using my sandblaster yesterday and of course it stopped working due to moisture. My water seperator broke a few months age so I bypassed it for now. I know I need to go get a new one. When I drained my tank I noticed the water comes out yellow and slimy like there is oil getting into the tank. It's been this way for as far back as I can remember. Is this normal? My compressor is a craftsman about 20 years old with normal to light use.
  14. I need to make a set for my car, do you have to box the ends for strength?
  15. I'm going to try adjusting it as soon as I put everything back together. If that don't work I may attempt a rebuild myself.
  16. I have the axle and springs out of the car now. I didn't find any play in the kingpins. I did notice the "shackles" that hold the springs have a little play in tyhem. They are kind of odd, I cleaned them all up and have to put them back into the frame to see if I can tell what was wrong there. 70 year old grease is messy stuff.
  17. I pulled my front axle and leaf springs out this morning. I seem to have some play in the steering box. I didn't have time to look into it any further to see if there is an adjustment to tighten it up or if it needs a rebuild. I saw in a catalog they offer a rebuild kit, is this something I can do at home without any specialized tools?
  18. Any tips on how to correctly determine if there is play in the kingpins? I tried moving the wheel back and forth and I don't feel anything wrong, I do have some play in the steering box though. I want to make sure everything in the front suspension is tight while I'm doing this so I don't have to take it apart again later.
  19. My car has actual perchs on it. They look different, they seem a little more "curvy" than some I've used in the past. I looked a little better and they do look welded. Here's a crappy picture.
  20. It is a straight axle. They perchs look a little different than any others I have seen or worked with.
  21. I'm getting ready to pull the front axle and leafsprings on my 38. While I'm doing this I want to make sure everything is tight. How do I check the kingpins? Are the axle perchs welded to the axle? I don't see any welds but I think they are supposed to be welded on.
  22. I want to add a set of radials too but I also want a second set of 15" wheels so I can keep my original 16's for shows. My springs in the front are flat, I'm afraid to get new ones, it would probably raise it a couple of inches.
  23. Nice car, please tell me more about it. What size wheels and tires are those? Do you still have the stock suspension? I'm trying to figure a way to lower the front with the stock leaf springs and solid axle. I think I'm going to try pulling a couple of springs.
  24. So, my car is called a touring sedan? The book shows either deluxe or a roadking. My vin falls under the deluxe category in the book.
  25. I would love to have the top chopped on our car, but, I don't think I could ever go through with it. According to my vin number and the shop manual I believe my car is considered a P6 deluxe. I have heard them called trunk backs and touring sedans. I'm really not positive what the correct term for the car is.
