  1. An out of balanced engine is like a shoping cart with a wobbly wheel. The crank is trying to shake around in the main bearings. Also be sure to balance the pressure plate, flywheel and damper. It will add many miles to the bearing life.
  2. I can't believe you guys have this much time to worry about these things. Don't you cars need something done to them to improve them. Decide what you want to pay bid to that, win the item or leave. Your going to worry yourselfs to death...
  3. I bought one from NAPA for my 48. $68.00
  4. It seems to me that the radiator is what is broke. Fix that first, don't fill it with mud.
  5. Very well done car. And how can you put a price on a good time.
  6. Should be a 218.
  7. greg g, Thanks for the link. Great information on the history of pistons.
  8. If the pistons are used there might be a small burr at the snap ring groove. This is common with round snap rings. If they are new pistons that has new pins and the air tempature is cold try putting the pistons in hot water for a few minutes. If that does not work, then you will have to have a machine shop lightly hone the piston to .0003 to.0005 clearance.
  9. I have my bolt out. It is a 1 1/8 x 14. The thread is 1 1/8 long. The hex head is 1 13/16 and 3/8 thick.
  10. I just did my rods. I have a Sunnen honing machine to do them on. They (Sunnen) call for .0003 to .0005 for a full floating pin of this size. You can not have .0000 clearance, it will be a press fit. Any good automotive machine shop will have this type of machine.
  11. I just bought one on ebay. There is one listed now, not cheap, but there is one. Mine fits well and is NOS so the ad said, and appers to be so. BRASS Water Distribution TUBE in the search box should find it.
  12. The bottom one has the same firewall mount as my 48 four door. It is a different heater but mounts the same and the defroster outlet is the same
  13. I have been a machinist for 51 years. 20 years in engine machine business. Last 15 making parts for collector cars. Retired now, still working some just to by parts for the 1948 Special Deluxe. ( It is just like the first car I owned )
  14. Try this one, it also has a flathead engine. The reason that I knew is I have made parts for one of the five built. Not this one but a silver one that can be seen if you google Chryslar Thunderbolt.http://auto.ocregister.com/2010/02/12/attention-jay-leno-rare-41-chrysler-thunderbolt-for-sale/28601/
  15. I only have 1 cannon ball and it is in the cannon. The brass monkey is just for looks.
  16. It is 7:30 A.M. in Reno, NV and it is 12 degrees, had to bring in the brass monkey.
  17. I might suggest Ironwood for longer life manifold
  18. The easy way to remember the firing order is: to young, to old, just right= 15, 36, 24
  19. I am glad BobT said Elko GA, I live in Reno and was thinking Elko NV. Don't think I can make it to Elko GA.
  20. The pressure will be the same in both tanks. You will have twice the the amount of air, but the compresser will run twice as long to fill two tanks.
  21. I was in the dog house so bad one time that when a friend drove up, I didn't if I should shake his hand or pee on his tire.
  22. I was in the engine business for 25 years. You should be able to turn over a short block at 40 ft.lbs. or less. If a rope seal is used and installed correctly it is not much more drag than a rubber seal. You must soak the rope in oil and work the oil into the seal by hand to soften it. Install the seal in the groove and work it down into the groove with wood hammer handle or something round. Only after that cut off the excess with a new sharp razor blade.
