Minus twenty last night here. Went out to start a tractor with NEW batteries and pluged in all night. It just said uhhhhh nooooo yaaaa dont. Read as spinning SSOOOOO slow it would NEVER start,,,even ether was a no win with a slow spinning starter!! How do you guys with minus 40 get things started when its THAT cold?? Even plugging the block heaters in dont throw enough heat to make the starter spin!! I need your input here, watcha think Canadians??? THX fer any help!!--don-

Right after I posted that observation above, about NOT wanting any snow, ,,,It started snowing for real HERE!! couldnt see a quarter mile and that is pretty rare for NO wind,,,and THATS even rarer. We are officially in a 'snow' advisory' area. Just WHAT do they mean by that,,,we MUST look outside and be advised what is falling is snow?? The weather service is getting sillier every year. Storm watch, tornado advisory, yep I watch for them EVERY day,,,duh. How dumb ARE people. I know some people that FREAK out big time,,,every time 'something' is announced here. And they are constantly announcing something to amaze people with,,,nothing happens and its the little boy that cried wolf too many times!! When the frieght train is roaring in your front yard,,,time to hit the basement!! Till then its just a common rain storm, happens all the time!!! Weather is a fact of life and always will, without it,,better check your pulse!! My 2 cents worth!! -d-

The ONLY reason I can see for NOT pulling the pan as suggested is...the price of a gasket. How expensive is a gasket in the scope of the project??? Even the blue form a gasket isnt too expensive and...works!! Its an 'excellent' way to see the health of all bottom end parts before the real work of installing(and possible removing) it again AFTER its too late. Call it a 'piece of mind' insurance ticket. IF the motor was to stay IN the car and taking it out was only way to accomplish said feat,,,maybe not. Since it is out and on the floor anyway,,,just good sense. Tell somebody AFTER you had problems,,,that you saved the price of a gasket,,and see how foolish it feels to say such things THEN!!! Your milage MAY vary,,but NOT-SO-MUCH!!! IF it needs just a new set of bearings bolted in,,think how much better that is for the engine,,,or the filter screen cleaned even!! At the bare minimum I sure would stick the air compressor into that copper tubing and see what else you can blast out of there!! Much more efficent than a lung blow!! You might even over fill the whole bottom end with kerosene or diesel, then stick that long bent copper tube everywhere you can and blow some bubbly air and drain a few times in a row!!

IF "I" ever saw snow again,,,it would be far too soon!! Your welcome to ALL my share of it!!!

There was alot of older kids teaching younger kids, specially when student counts were sorta high, those years. You get all nine grades full and several slower students scattered around and they really needed it. You also got a onstant review of other kids lessons as class was held aloud in the same room, on folding chairs up by the teachers desk so 'everybody' heard everything, every day. Cant exactly remeber how those chores were dealt out. most shared duties of some type. Pumping the water from the outside manuel handle pump was a daily need. We had a 'crock' jar we put it in, inside the school, had a button on it like a big water cooler has now, to get a drink,,,everybody had their own cup. I 'think' the boys had one in their coat room and one in girls coat room, sure couldnt get those coats too close together in those days. I think those coat rooms turned into inside bathrooms the last couple years. I musta been really hard on that old school cause my last year of it was the last year it ran!!! I still have the pictures of Abe Lincoln and George Washington that always hung on the back wall. On the back of the pics it is signed by all the kids and the teacher on the year it was bought.(like 20-30 years previous. Familiar family names written on there. Wish I would have bughten that crock water cooler!! Too young and dumb for that. Do remeber the sweeping compound we always used in the big metal cans. And having to scoop coal into the furnace a couple times a day from the coalroom. And the 'cave' constructed in all concrete for storm shelter. We always played some game over the top of that, like tag, but if you got taged then you stayed on top and caught others going over it without getting caught. or the one that got caught then was free to play with the others jumping up and over the concrete cave without getting touched. Was always arguements as to whether somebody 'got' touched or not. Playing on top of a rounded piece of concrete,,,who would thunk these days. Wish I could 'member the name of the game we invented for this. other game we invented was 'jumping ' out of the swings the furtherest,,,we could really fly, as we got older and more experienced. or swing the highest without the chains slacking enough to knock us out of the swing on the down snap! We had huge swings made of heavy wall pipe cemented into the ground,, those darn chains sure bit the fingers tho!! And a BIG board seat. We always thought we could go fast enough to go right around the circle without falling off, cant remeber anybody doing that, always fell first! The sweeping can empties, I remember, used to be perfect homes for the 13 stripe ground squirels we drowned out of their holes and captured. Pumped all water by hand, pour it down the hole and catch the squirrel in a bucket, coming back up . had a whole can full of those pesky ground squirrels and the teacher then caught us, and we had to let them go. drat!!! Spring time was always ball for recess. Ever play ball on a field with NO left field. was long and narrow and hitting a ball to left field was out-of-bounds. Nothing past third base but tall cottonwood trees and the road past which was out of bounds. Had to pitch real soft and easy for the little tykes, and tricky and fast for the big ones. Sometimes the same games lasted for days, innings were few and long and outs were hard to come by. used disc blades for bases. Best part of the OLD days is I was younger then!!!

Definiton of lonliness---going to one room country school all 9 grades one room-same teacher. Total of about 10-12 kids in all classes together. Played ball or tag with all the way from kindergarteners to 8th grade, mostly grown ups. I never had another boy within four grades up or down from me!!! And girls that age dont LIKE boys!! Kids tended to clump in groups of similiar age, similiar(girls or boys).. I was left alone!!'Unless' we were playing group games. Needless to say, thats why my social skills are sorely lacking!! The socially unkept,, --just don-- PS. Today was about 0* and wind chill of 20-30 below. 2 days ago it was 60* or so!!

I sent one, didnt get a reply. is their a reason,,,or didnt it go thru??

We walked over the top of the full grown apple trees EVERY winter. The snow banks were that high.(and hard) never had a fear of breaking off any valuable limbs cause they were ALL covered. breaking off an apple tree limb was a chargable offense,,because we had to eat the apples,,,worms and all, couldnt waste money on sprays and such,,,just added to the protein level of the apple. Only thing worse than finding a worm in your apple,,,was finding half a worm!!! I live in this same house I grew up in. The apple trees are gone, but I am STILL here!! Roads are graded up better now,(still ALL gravel),,but snowbanks arent NEARLY as deep as the 'old' days!! Dad and mom says back in '48 and '49 they were snowed in from around Thanksgiving till middle of January or February ,,,and had to walk out to get a ride to town on the highway so they could get to work every day and then bring back groceries and other necessities, at night, This was back in the 'outhouse days' besides. We never had an indoor potty till I was in high school, nor an automatic washing machine.(ever use a wringer washer??) You just cant imagine how cold you can freeze delicate parts of your body in an outhouse!!!

I went to country shcool back then too. They did close school when the drifts got over 3-4' tall. Before that we rode on 'tractors' or anything taller when 'haing to get there. They never 'wanted' to close cause that would mean one more day in the spring,,and that would never do,,,farmers wanted their kids home so they could 'plow' for them!! My school house a mile away was surrounded on all sides by high creek water every spring time thaw,,,after those 10' snow banks thawed,,,specially after a warm rain!! I remeber MORE than once riding to school in the back of a manure spreader(they had taller wheels),,,sitting on a board trying NOT to touch the sides. The tractor and spreader would plow right thru that 2-3' of water running OVER the road. Sometimes the water was deep enough we had to hold our feet and shoes up out of it,,,inside the spreader. All the kids that could came around to my side of the school house and go with us and the teacher. Darn it!! NOW what kind of fuss would have been made if the tractor had gone down in washed out holes(happened all the time) and the spreader would have been washed away in the ice berg conditions (NEVER could have swam in that COLD water) and current was VERY swift!! But by dang,,,we are having school TODAY!! They would hang a teacher or parents that abused there kids that way!! Never could see where you were going so would have been real easy to drive off side of open bridge!! YIKES!! maybe thats why they all go to town school these days

Mirage 48, The only thing I didnt see on that list is coating the outside bedroom door handle when the lock is broke,,,so your kids dont enter, cant turn the slick knob,,,to come in while you and your partner are "BUSY":D or is that a if they do???

Friend from Texas just sent me this. Its 'like' his first car,,,with a hemi in it!! http://www.forwardlook.net/1956Chrysler/imp4door.htm Thinking back I think I rode in one of those once back in the middle 60's, wow what a car!!
-
I have a friend in Texas that said he was raised in these things, and loved them,, I think he said his first car was a hemi tho,,,forget the year!! I had one of these once,,,bought it for a demo derby,,,big mistake!! Didnt last from noon to dinner!! Somehow the intake gasket blew out,,,and the push button trans,,,quit working,,,darn demo derbys any way,,,wrecked too many good old cars!!
-
I just saw one good looking one over on the bay. I,in all my years,,,have "NEVER" ever seen one before, least wise in these parts. How many of these things were made,,,and who, what kind of buyer did they appeal to?? More of a 'city' car?? This wasnt an aftermarket conversion kit or something,,,was it?? how weird they looked!!
-
Yes I did mean the white one pictured. What year is that? Looked like a 4 door hardtop,,,was I lookin right?? I can almost read the phone number on the windsheild but I dont think it had an area code, anybody know it? Does the inside look as good as the outside? THX fer any info ---don--
-
Are you saying that he couldnt sell this car for even $1500. It says $4200 in the windsheild. It also says 'Must sell' what ever that really means!! Any body know what motor tranny combo is in this car?? Wasnt this one of those push button on the dash models?? Still for sale??

Funny what going thru a disc mower conditioner does to good wrenches when somebodies mind was preoccupied with other thoughts and mistakenly got left where it shouldnt have. Used as a dont turn bolt holder inside the machine. IT has alot more power than I do!! But I still use it occasionally!! Its called wrong place,,,RIGHT time!!!
-
Sounds like an excellent excuse to add to your tool collection. Nothin is TOO good for the good ole girls.
-
The local blacksmith ONLY uses Kroil.(((for rusty bolts))) His comment is WD-40 's only 'GOOD' use is to start chainsaws, lawnmowers and similiar things that wont start otherwise. Lots of time they will fire up on the good ole WD-40 rather than regular gas cause its more flamable!! Sounds like a good use of it to me!!!
-
PB Blaster and Kroil here. I found a gallon can of kroil for about the same price as two aresol cans and lasts much 'longer' in an old WD-40 squirt bottle. There is still a couple cans of some cheapie stuff rolling around here but doesnt get used much cept for making a rusty nut roll better on the bolt! Dad was too tight to buy a can of anything. He was given some once for helping at my uncles sale. Thats the 'first' I have ever known around here!! Before that ,,,diesel fuel only!!

Alot of those seats were temporarily removed to transport calves, lambs pigs and other livestock to and from the market. Always heard of one guy who took his HUGE boar pig to market that way. supposedly weighed like 8-900# That would be bigger than three fat ladies sitting back there. It would 'challenge' the available space,no room to turn around!!(and it better have been a 4 door!!!) I think I can personaly remember one time in a blizzard and we needed some coal, dad took the back seat out and hauled a good jag of coal home to keep the fires stoked. We ALWAYS went to the sale barn and bought baby bottle calves very reasonably and hauled them home just making them lay down in the trunk. Surprisingly they rarely if ever made a mess either. As long as they are laying down they dont. Still did that up to sorta recent years!! The 'looks' you get doing that are 'priceless'!!!

Whooo hooo!!! Anyone else here win a new BMW?

Enjoy your new ride!!! I think even the people that can spell English NOW know how to get to many unsuspecting wanna-be's. Lots of new twists in the old ways these days Heard of the guy who took a good looking check to a bank to cash for some stuff he sold,,,was quickluy in handcuffs for "possesing" a forged (or illegal) financial instrument. And last I heard this 'innocent' guy was 'stuck' and the charges were going to stay put. Seems banks have LOTS of power and they are held harmless for ANY thing they may have done wrong,,,but lo and behold YOU do something, even unknowingly, and your screwed!! -
I really DONT think Craigs list is the problem,,,its the buyers and sellers 'everywhere' on the net that know every scam, loophole, and knothole to actully squeeze money and goods out of. Being single I used to look at the 'Russian single ladies wanting American men" till a friend told me thats all a BIG scam,,,get as many bucks out of you as possible,(ZERO of mine),,then never hear from them again!! I was most concerned where I heard that even e-bay and other sites all over have fabulous cars for sale. You bid, you win,,,you go find out there never WAS a car in the first place. They swipe the picture from somewhere else and pretend its theirs. IS there ANY good way to prevent said thing from happening???? BUT the innocent guy who takes what he thinks is a good check to the bank and ends up in handcuffs, having to hire an expensive lawyer, and face down legitimate charges,,,is WAAAAAAY past sad!!!! ITS buyers and sellers BEWARE as far as I am concerned.-d-

I am sure I will be regarded appropriately as a stupid newbie for asking this. How often do you/should you/adjust the valves on flat head motors??? I drove them for years (in my youth) and NEVER known that cover to be off ,ever, on any of the cars I drove. My thinking is once they are in adjustment they stay that way!! BUT I have been wrong, often, and severely before and will be again!!! So how often 'should' they be adjusted?? And how often are 'you' adjusting them??? (I guess I ask cause I DONT know!!)(and WANT to)

Hillary 'putting up' with all Willies antics( especially so wide spread talked about and ridiculed),,,I dont KNOW any women I could do that with!!! But sure wouldnt wanna be married to HER either!! YIKES,,,that might drive me to____(you fill in the blank!!)
