All I can say is that those prices are beyond my budget as my car is a daily driver/grocery getter and my only car. The wife has hers. I need some knobs and will more than likely just make a quick mold of a knob with no lettering and make my own. They will be good enough for me.
I've searched and seen a lot of variations. What are you folks setting yours at ? 0, 2 before; what ? Have a heck of a flat spot while accelerating. Good idle, good after the flat spot. New plugs, wires, accelerator pump, recent cap and rotor.

Had the carb off and was taking play out of carb and linkage, filling accerator pump arm and re drilling, tightening ball ends etc. Decided to pull vac advance line to make sure it was unobstructed and lo and behold it was loose and so was the destributor itself. Now I know why it suddenly started running so rough. Will retime it when I get new accelerator pump in this week and get the carb back on. It's amazing how much slop there can be in the old linkage and the amount of wear on moving carb parts.
I think I'll just call it a 48 unless I'm talking to P14/D24 people and a 46 if I ever sell it. It was built in Dec of 48 and I was built in June of the same year so that works for me.
Numbers show it is a 49 1st series P15. State of NC arbitrarily titled it as a 46 because a 49 P15is not in their data base. People on the street say it can't be a 49 because it's the wrong body style. I know it's a 1st Series 49 but get tired of trying to explain it. Should I just call it a 46 to make it easier or am I just being to darn touchy ?
Mine is definately aluminum or some other non magnetic silver colored light weight metal. Not a rust hole but eaten through non the less with a steel pipe threaded in.
Mine had a hole through the side about 1/2 by 1/4 and the patch is flared over hole on both sides. Looks like it should work for at least a few hours until I recieve the replacemnt. Battery tray is aluminum also to my surprize. Must have had availabilty of such material at end of WW2.
Just want to say thankyou to everyone who has helped me get my baby on the road. Drove around the block several times today giving rides to everyone and had a blast. Going to get plates on it Monday. I'm sure there are going to be more problems and questions on down the road. Still more body work, electrical and interior work to do but I am so glad the forum is here to help. Alan and Hubble the wonder dog now have a Cool Ride.
Had to pressurize tank to get it started this morning. Hasn't started in about 4 days. Bowl was empty and wouldn't pump fuel until I did that. Drove it arround the block and it quit. Bowl empty again. Will sit and idle for much longer period of time but go down the road and it runs dry. Pump not up to snuff or what ? Now that the power discs are functioning properlyshe stops on a dime. That was the best part of the test drive. The pushing it back to the driveway wan't.
Item # 20. Where can I find one of these ? Searched threads and tech but lost. Mine is shot. Can I temporarily block it off and cap outlet from thermostat houseing and drive without hurting anything ?
I'm an old VW freak and remembered the channel available for the Bug, one piece window kits. Checked with the local Bug shop and they had em on hand. @ $20 bucks. took an old one from the P15 with me and sure looked like they will work. Just another place. Remember that the bug was 40's tech and I think you may find several items we can use. Check out someplace like CIP1.com I've bought many items from them over the years and been quite pleased.
