  1. It always makes me happy when I remember I drove one of the old cars during my work day. Even better when I walk out and get to drive it home.
  2. I wish this was an option, but the '49 doesn't have a glove box behind the steering wheel - ha!
  3. Headed into work this morning. I like how the rising sun illuminates our water tower this time of year.
  4. Awesome! Welcome. This forum will be a great resource and you'll probably spend too much time on here. The fact you could drive the car home says a lot. Share more photos when you have time - we love photos just as much as conversation.
  5. I really have nothing to say on this topic other than my 52 Merc. originally had red wheels with the dark green body and that is what they still are. The pain is very faded and you can hardly see them with the full wheel covers on.
  6. My mom wanted to go for a fall Sunday drive so we all piled in my '49 for what turned out to be a 45 mile drive around the countryside. Perfect autumnal weather here in central MN right now! Too some photos of the car on film, but will have to post those later.
  7. I don't leave any black clouds of smoke behind me, but there is a nice patch of black laid down behind the exhaust pipe on the cement floor - ha! My 52 Mercury started that when I had it parked in the same stall.
  8. I do notice some sort of possible leakage under the oil filter. There are really too many options - ha!
  9. I'll definitely check compression. Is there a specific tool you'd recommend to test this? Also, do I need to disconnect the fuel line or anything when doing this test?
  10. I do notice that the covers over the valve spring gasket side of the engine does appear wet so that is probably part of the issue too. Thanks for the suggestions!
  11. My 49 Plymouth has consumed a considerable amount of oil since May. 2 gallons of oil have been added to the crankcase besides the fresh oil change this spring. I have driven it about 2500 miles up to this point and by my estimate I seem to need to add a quart of oil every 120 miles (approximately) in order to keep the oil level at the add mark. I have been told that keeping it at add is fine since many of these cars would lose the oil between the full and add mark anyway and just stay at add. Well, mine goes below add... I notice an oil smell when driving - mainly on acceleration, I think. When I park anywhere there gets to be a oil spot in my parking space under the engine and my garage has developed a large area of oil over the course of the summer. I noticed on Sunday that after I parked in the garage I could see a drip of oil coming out the vent hole in the bottom of the bellhousing - is that possible? There is no trouble (that I notice) with acceleration and the oil pressure always stays up above 40 when driving. Probably around 50-60. It goes down a bit when idling after warming up, but never all the way down to zero. If I can get by with just continuing to add oil for now, I will. I'll monitor to see if it gets worse, but this seems to be consistent as long as I've had the car (just over a year). My assumption is that the engine has never been rebuilt - just over 50,000 miles. It had not even 2000 miles added to the odometer since about 1986 if the sticker on the door is correct.
  12. Had the ‘49 out for supper and ice cream. The local shop closes in less than a week...
  13. Good Morning, I found an interesting listing about 45 minutes away from me. It doesn't look like a bad price for the condition of the car from the pictures. I've always wanted a car with suicide doors and wouldn't this compliment my green '49 Plymouth nicely?! Take a look here https://fargo.craigslist.org/cto/d/barrett-1947-dodge-deluxe-suicide-doors/7201394333.html
  14. I'm SO glad to hear the car is running again and able to be enjoyed by you and your family! This is the content we enjoy!
  15. I am using a 30 weight non-detergent from Napa and a zinc additive. Based on what I can tell my '49 Plymouth engine has never been rebuilt and it does burn oil and leak oil. Every time I park somewhere there will be a small dot of oil when I leave... The garage where I store it during the summer has developed a large area of oil so the rear seal is probably needing to be replaced.
  16. Awesome car! Will be fun to see how things progress for you. This forum is a GREAT resource and you'll probably find you spend more time on here than you should - haha! Welcome!
  17. Coffee is a definite must in my book. I need to figure out a solution for my '49 - holding a coffee cup for a two hour plus drive can get old really quickly (speaking from experience).
  18. I just noticed the cupholder! Very creative ?
  19. I applaud you!! That car is a beauty!
  20. Nice to see your car out in the light again! I took m '49 to my nephew's third birthday up town today.
  21. What an absolutely beautiful piece of history! Thanks for sharing!
  22. Here here! You can pick me up on the way to Worden's!
  23. Sorry I can't give any comments or input - just glad to see an update from you. Been wondering how you've been enjoying the Meadowbrook this summer!
