My First Car -- P15 1947 Plymouth Deluxe
NickPickToo replied to NickPickToo's topic in P15-D24 Forum
Looks like the blue was done later. It speckles over the dark green in the areas where the green survived. The green is in ares we’re someone would have not bothered with as it would not have shown. It’s in the body At the top of the trunk and it’s on the back Of the trunk lid towards where it attaches to the body. It’s also the only color that looks professionally done. There is also some old masking tape in the trunk where someone wrote "Dodge Truck Blue" followed by a code that may be a paint mix on it. I'm guessing that at some point someone just wanted to paint it blue -- that could explain the engine blue too. The black primer on the outside was put on by Don Marshall, Marshall Motors (Jackson MI). He sold us the car. -

the wiring throughout is mostly a cloth type wire casing— lots in good shape but also a lot that is frayed and dried up. Would think that’s a fire hazard. Does it need to be replaced? -

There was what looked like a rats nest in the back seat springs -

built and sold a few computers in junior high. I actually have some ideas on how to make it for cheaper — lots of room in there — almost could fit a scaled back Xbox in that thing -

What to do? There are replacement tubes and fuses for the radio that were in the glove box. Im pretty sure I could fix this. But that radio housing has a lot of room — almost as big as a mini computer case. It could easily house a blue tooth audio setup. -

Interior actually looked in good shape before we Started but we took it out anyway. Good thing as there is surface rust in a number of places that would have been trouble down the road. Learning a lot about how this was put together. -

Dad says Mostly surface rust but needs to be scrapped up and painted or it will become a problem. Floor is most in need of work. Took front seat out and almost didn’t need to take off the bolts -

Looks like The original color (dark green) survived in the upper trunk. How would I research the actual mix for the original color? -

Thank you -- my dad and I discussed and we plan to rebuild and keep the original suspension. looks like most of the hard work will be floor panels and floor brackets -- we live close to the plymouth doctor so finding that should be ok -- was thinking the same thing -- learning to do some basic welding would be fun. Pics soon -

Engine is clean and runs well. Picture attached. Not sure it original or why it’s blue. Looks like color under paint is red or orange Part number on block is 1484929-31. How would I know if it’s a 218 or a 230? -

Thanks everyone (Dad typing now) Key takeaways: Seatbelts, Lights (LED), Breaks (consider all lines and duel MC with Disk conversion), Transmission may be fine but consider together with rear Diff., (will be interesting to see how he picks up on shifting manually on the tree) if original suspension can be firmed up and saved then save it. We are taking it down to the frame now to more fully assess and abate any rust issues. NPT will send pictures as he proceeds and ask questions as he progresses -

We run cross country practice near by each morning will try to come by. My granddad tells me that my grandmothers step dad was Joseph Frazer’s son, Robert. Indicates on Wikipedia that Joseph named the brand. Not a direct blood relationship but a cool coincidence. -
Hey Guys Taking drivers ed right now and while I'm really excited about driving soon, I wasn't feeling any of the newer model cars that I would likely be able to afford as a fist car. Where did all the style go after the cars of the 40's and the 50's. I asked my parents if I could put the budget into a real car: curves, character and charisma. My mom said I needed to write a proposal with a timeline and budget. My dad agreed to give me some help and advice. He was a mechanic in the Marine Corps. He can get just about any old motor running, but he can't weld or anything like that.. We found 47 Deluxe 2 door sedan, flathead six, three on the tree, VIN indicates Detroit steel. Body looks smooth with no sign of patches. The frame is straight with some surface rust but nothing too bad. Floor and floor brackets look like they will need attention for sure. There are some decisions to make that I could really use some help with. Safety and drivability are important because this will be my first car and my primary car. Engine runs and sounds great so sticking with the flathead, but is the three-speed transmission good enough for highways these days -- should I upgrade the transmission -- if so, what are the best option? The suspension is very loose and all drum breaks. Cant afford a custom chassie, but cant tell if rebuilding the suspension and upgrading to disk breaks is less expensive than just welding in a new suspension (MII). We would have to hire the welding. Which direction is most cost effective but still safe? Thanks in advance for your help. Nicholas.

Hi Seth, Starting a project too (age 15). Similar car 1947 Deluxe Coupe. Picture posted to my profile. Will follow you as we will have similar questions. Dad (really Mom) is controlling the budget so I will be looking for a lot of advice. Plan a full frame off restore and upgrade to make it safe and drivable - using it as primary when I'm 16 and can drive. I wont be able to afford a custom frame so it will remain mostly original. Has a flathead 6 but not sure original -- runs great and has a three on the tree.
