Here is another point of view. On my 2019 Honda CRV the oil filter is a spin on filter but the filter is in a vertical position so that when you loosen the filter to remove it all of the oil runs down your arm and then you have to have a container to directly catch the used oil and it is a messy job. But on my older ford Five hundred the oil filter was set in a horizontal position and was at the front of the engine and was easy to remove. When loosening the filter the oil would run out and directly fall into the collection container and it did not run all over the place. And there was no mess. So why do engineers design such stupid locations for oil filters instead of designing them to be an each replaceable item and make it easy for the mechanic and or home mechanic.
On my volo you have to loosen the lid prior to draining the oil so that the oil in the filter canister drains out with the engine oil. It is a tight fit to get the old filter out on the engine bay and installed but no entirely frustrating like the spin on filter on the old slant six engines and also on some of the fiftys Desoto where you have to stand on your head and have extra long arms.
