blue p15
I'm curious...I was looking through some items on eBay this morning and saw some 12 volt to 6 volt voltage reducers. Is it possible to jump start our 6 volt cars from a 12 volt source if there is a voltage reducer before our battery? The flow would be 12 volt source (not in a car) to jumper cables, jumper cables to voltage reducer, voltage reducer to 6 volt battery. It may not work - just curious. Thanks for any insights you might have!
DonaldSmith
That's a lot of amps to push through a voltage reducer. Usually the kind of resistor the boys are used to are for low-amp items like gauges. And it may be counterproductive. For the same oomph, 2 volt systems need half the amps as 6-volt systems. So by the time you reduce the volts, you have half the amps as a 6-volt system. There are threads here about jump-starting a 6-volt car with a 12-volt source, but the caveat is that radios and other stuff must be off, so they don't get fried. greg g
jump it with the battery out of the 12V equation. Connect the positive wire to a head bolt, Turn everything off but the ign switch to the run position then touch the negative jumper cable to the starter cable on the starter side of the solenoid. No 12V will pass through the battery but the battery will power the coil till the engine starts and the genny starts making juice.
