Olddaddy Posted December 18, 2006 Report Posted December 18, 2006 I posted this on the Pilothouse forum by mistake a few days ago, thought I'd try here. I had a fellow in my shop asking about self-canceling turn signals. I've seen them, and there's an nos set on ebay at the moment also. I was wondering if there are any aftermarket kits that self-cancel? The car is not original, and originality is not a necessity since the cost of it is so high anymore. What's out there, nos or aftermarket? Quote
bob westphal Posted December 18, 2006 Report Posted December 18, 2006 NAPA used to sell one that had a little canceling wheel that rode on the hub of the steering wheel. Give them a check. Quote

Olddaddy Posted December 18, 2006 Author Report Posted December 18, 2006 That auction has ended now, item #200054584516. It sold for just over $80, not bad really considering I expected it to go over $150. I guess I should have bid. Quote
PatS.... Posted December 18, 2006 Report Posted December 18, 2006 Big rig parts houses and dealers have these in a few different models, (all 12 volt though). Quote
Robin (UK) Posted December 19, 2006 Report Posted December 19, 2006 Charlie, Looks like you missed out on a good kit, there. I have one like the attached (but in a light brown metallic color) in my car. It works great, and looks correct for the period - I'm very happy with it. They come up on ebay regularly (in fact, I've taken the picture from a current listing). Happy hunting. Robin. Quote
BobT-47P15 Posted December 19, 2006 Report Posted December 19, 2006 Yes, that was a common type used on a lot of 40s and 50s cars. I had one like if off a chevy, but the rubber cancel wheel would not work with the Plymouth steering wheel. The angle or something was not right. Now I can't recall the brand name of the signal. My current signal is manual cancel, and I sometimes forget to turn it off, even with having an indicator light just below the dash (the two red lights lower left). Quote
Niel Hoback Posted December 20, 2006 Report Posted December 20, 2006 Bob, I have a unit very much like yours, and had trouble remembering to cancel it. I found a very small electronic beeper, about the size of a quarter, at Radio Shack. The package said it would work on something like 3 to 16 volts. I just wired it into the pilot bulb and it beeps when the light flashes. I had to put a piece of tape over the holes in it because it was just a little too loud. Quote
BobT-47P15 Posted December 20, 2006 Report Posted December 20, 2006 They have covered all the bases, so it seems, with their switch. (turnswitch.com) However, it may be a little pricier at $170 plus 8.50 shipping than some would want to pay. Niel......maybe I should invest in the beeper. I can't hear the little ticking sound the flasher unit makes (wife says SHE can hear it....i'm just getting deef). Will check with our local Radio Shack store. They have several small buzzers that resemble this one. (online catalog) This particular one is for 3 to 28 volts, and has a cost of $5.29 -- does that seem like the one you got?? Quote
Niel Hoback Posted December 20, 2006 Report Posted December 20, 2006 Bob, it said something like "peizo" on it, but yes, that does sound about right. Small, round, plastic. Ha, kinda like everything else at Radio Shack! Quote
Guest Nile Limbaugh Posted December 21, 2006 Report Posted December 21, 2006 If you find one on ebay, be aware there are two different types: one with seven wires that will work like factory, through the existing taillights and parkers, and one with only four that will require additional lights. I accidently bought a four wire and had to resell it. Quote
