47droptop Posted July 20, 2008 Report Posted July 20, 2008 Does anyone know if Plymouth used the same convertible frame in the early forties as in the late forties? May expand my search for a frame for my 47. Thanks Quote
Robin (UK) Posted July 20, 2008 Report Posted July 20, 2008 My guess is yes. Certainly the 42 models will be the same, probably earlier ones as well. I'd suggest you call Bill Hirsch and ask him whether the patterns he holds for the tops for the earlier models are the same as for the P15. I got my top from him, ready stitched. I've always found him to be very helpful. He's at www.hirschauto.com Good luck. Robin. Quote
claybill Posted July 20, 2008 Report Posted July 20, 2008 negative....the 40s and '41's were different. i had a 41 and a 46 last year. i put dual exhaust on both. the frames were different. bill Quote
greg g Posted July 21, 2008 Report Posted July 21, 2008 Well now I guess we need to know if you're talking about the vehicle frame or the frame for the convertible top........ Quote
47droptop Posted July 21, 2008 Author Report Posted July 21, 2008 sorry guys, I was referring to the convertible top frame and if anyone knows of one, PLEASE let me know. Thanks Quote
BobT-47P15 Posted July 21, 2008 Report Posted July 21, 2008 Are there any of the older model converts around your area to measure the bows? Also would be good to take pics of their position, etc. At some point, I could probably measure my bows and take a pic on my 47. Claybill.....do you have any pics or measurements??? There is a guy here who has the remains of a 51 (i think) convert that has the bows. Don't know if it's close enough to be able to use at least some part of them. From parts manual...... Quote
claybill Posted July 21, 2008 Report Posted July 21, 2008 my 41 and my former 46 had a top frame that looked exactly like the one in picture/manual. also; i always assumed that the front header beam was wood...it felt like ti..but it is not! it is shaped metal. the connecting rod system goes inside it, that hooks on to the clamps on top of the windshield..... bill Quote
BobT-47P15 Posted July 21, 2008 Report Posted July 21, 2008 Do you have the vacuum cylinders that operate the top?? Here is a picture of one. Quote
47droptop Posted July 21, 2008 Author Report Posted July 21, 2008 Thanks Bob for the pics. I do have the vacuum cylinders. The guy I bought the car from has a restored car I can get patterns from and fabricate , however I'm missing the header also, which would be very difficult to fab. So in the meantime I'm on the hunt. I am interested in the 51 parts, they may work with some modifications. Thanks Glen By the way, I'm also hunting for the windshield wiper pivot assemblies, convertible specific. Quote
BobT-47P15 Posted July 22, 2008 Report Posted July 22, 2008 Boy, those pivots are seemingly pretty scarce. I look for them all the time and have had no luck. I have the originals, but one it pitted and would like to find a better one to replace it. I think they used them on the wagons also, but not sure. They look like this. Quote
BobT-47P15 Posted July 22, 2008 Report Posted July 22, 2008 Yep.....looks like also on the wagon. This one is for sale on ebay. Quote
Jim Yergin Posted July 22, 2008 Report Posted July 22, 2008 Bob, the woodie wagons used the convertible cowel. They even have the top latch fittings above the windshield behind the wood trim boards. They used the same windshield wiper stands and they are pretty rare. Jim Yergin Quote
BobT-47P15 Posted July 22, 2008 Report Posted July 22, 2008 So, the woodie wagon has the same size windshield as the convert? I see those short little wiper blades in the pic. Quote
BobT-47P15 Posted July 23, 2008 Report Posted July 23, 2008 Interesting, Jim. Wagons use convertible cowl. Convertibles use convertible cowl. But converts use business coupe rear end including trunk lid. Always something to be learned. Quote
Lou Earle Posted July 23, 2008 Report Posted July 23, 2008 I had a 41 chevy coupe and the wiper mounts looked exactly like the plymouth convert ones might way to check out chevy dealers or parts on bay Lou Quote
BobT-47P15 Posted July 23, 2008 Report Posted July 23, 2008 Hmmm, Lou. They do look similar. Good idea to watch Chevy stuff. On coupes, too. Quote
47droptop Posted July 24, 2008 Author Report Posted July 24, 2008 THANKS Lou, it's info like this that makes these forums awesome! Quote
