Howdy all. I have a problem...I finally installed my 36 chrysler OD in my 39 ply and the reverse doesn't work. I can drive it in 1st, 2nd, and 3rd gears. The reverse gear definately is in the tranny, I can put it in gear...but when I let the clutch out...NO DICE!!! It doesn't move the drive shaft...engine just runs..and the car doesn't move! ANY IDEAS??? I am ready to explode.

Make sure your cable is pulled out of OD.

Is there a definate engagement felt when you go through the gears then into reverse?

The only thing I can think of is your cable is misadjusted and will not allow reverse to be functional. I left my cable in twice when I tried reverse, did not work.

I'm not sure what else to tell you but someone here should be able to.

I'll keep checking back to see if you've got it figured out.

Good Luck!

Well, I just took it for a drive in OD...I think it was working...seemed much easier to accelerate...and speeds were higher...kinda hard to tell though without a working speedo. I then manually pushed the lever back to drive without OD...seemed like the regular tranny performance...so I guess the OD is working.

I then tried to put it in reverse....STILL NO DICE...I thought maybe driving it around would maybe un-stick something...ah well...I just don't see how it doesn't work!

I really don't want to take the whole car apart again...if it does have a bad tranny..then i'm out of luck...and out of transportation. AND out of money...

When you say "easier to accelerate" do you mean off the line has more power? If you do you are out of OD. Try reverse then.

by "easier to accelerate" I mean...it feels like I am using less engine power to accelerate ...and I get higher top speeds....

I tried the lever in regular tranny mode...stil no dice...I just don't understand what is happening.....

Is your transmission a column shift or a flor or shift? If column, perhaps you need to tweek the linkage. If a floor shift then I would thing the cable is not completely disengaging the Over drive. The Id is basically a planetary gear set up that allows the output shaft to turn at a higher rpm than the input shaft. But if not completely disengaged will not work (as in transmit power) in reverse. So even with the trans working and the shaft spinning, if it is not all the way out, the planetary set up not allow the output shaft to spin.

Check your cable to make sure you are getting full movement of the on off lever.

tHANKS FOR THE INFO...

I SHOULD HAVE MENTIONED THAT IT IS FLOOR SHIFTER AND THERE IS NO CABLE HOOKED UP AS OF YET...i SET IT MANUALLY BY PUSHING THE LEVER BACK AND TIEING IT WITH WIRE SO IT DOESN'T ENGAGE THE OD. (darn caps lock, sorry) I drove it around and it worked fine going forward. Just no reverse..I am guessing that somehow the OD is locked in somehow. The levr moves fine..both sides too. Which means...I have too yank the dang thing out again. I'm not happy about that.

ANY OTHER IDEAS AS TO WHAT IS HAPPENINg????????

Not 100% fluent in OD's hopefully one more familiar with the setups will have some info. Were it me I would certainly not want to pull it.

On the newer ODs like the R10, there is an internal lockout bar between the trans and the OD. It keeps the OD from engaging when the trans is in reverse. Without it, the roller and cage setup in the OD will just freewheel and you'll have no reverse. If you have any booklets or manuals about your earlier OD, read through and there might be a troubleshooting section that may cover this. Hope someone that really knows the earlier units will know more than me about the lockout setup in those. It sure sounds like that's where the problem is.

Yeah...I've been looking at the old motors manual I have...it has a similar type od in it...and I am guessing the reverse lockout is not working correctly. Unfortunately...the manual I have does not have a schematic on the actual tranny I have...mine is from a 36 chrysler...the book has one for 37 and 38 chrysler/desoto. SImilar I guess..

Next step for me....take the floor back out...disconnect the new driveshaft I just bought($375)...disconnect the tranny...Take the OD apart...go to the shooting range...release some frustration....come home and tackle the OD...:D:mad:

well fellow Moparians...

I spent all day today taking the OD out...and then apart..I discovered a misaligned part which caused the od to malfunction...LUCKILLY it is fixed now. I drove it around in NON-OD mode...works great. NOW to rig up the cable.

Great news, glad you got it done. It sounds like a lot of work, but think of it this way: Now you are the resident guru on the 30's OD in so cal. :)

I'm glad you got it figured out.

Have fun!
