38plymouth Posted April 28, 2008 Report Posted April 28, 2008 I got stuck driving in a terrible downpour Saturday afternoon. I have always had a small amount of water that would leak into the car at the drivers side lower corner of the windshield. I only noticed it when I washed it. I found out Saturday that bothe sides leak bad in a rainstorm. Water was dripping onto the floor on both sides and the door panels near the front got soaked. From the outside my weatherstripping looks to be in great shape. Is there supposed to be any sealant in there and how how is it to replace the weatherstripping? Quote
bobby horne Posted April 28, 2008 Report Posted April 28, 2008 My manual says to apply a small amount of windshield sealer between the glass and rubber along the outside of the car.....I bought a tube of windshield sealer at the place I bought my new glass from, and the sealer can be bought at Carquest auto parts................ 38plymouth Posted April 28, 2008 Author Report Posted April 28, 2008 Thanks, I'll give that a try. Hopefully that does it, I really don't feel like pulling the windshield. Quote
Young Ed Posted April 28, 2008 Report Posted April 28, 2008 There is a special high flow silicone windshield sealer I believe its a 3m product. Had good luck with it on a couple modern cars and it worked pretty decently on my 48. I had huge leaks and am now probably down to your level. Some of my leaks are because I didnt want to put a new gasket in before painting the car Quote
38plymouth Posted April 28, 2008 Author Report Posted April 28, 2008 I wish I could determine exactly where the water comes in. I have crawled up under the dash several times trying to figure it out. I may try this sealant first, if it doesn't work I guess I have to learn how to change the gasket. Quote
billwillard Posted April 28, 2008 Report Posted April 28, 2008 Easiest fix is to go to a glass shop and let them put sealer on body side and glass side all the way around. $15 to 20 bucks and no more leaks. Trying to find these leaks can be nerve racking to say the least. Quote
james curl Posted April 29, 2008 Report Posted April 29, 2008 The wiper towers have a rubber gasket under them and it gets old and brittle and cracks. You would be suprised how much water can get inside of the car while driving in the rain through the hole that mounts the towers. Quote
38plymouth Posted April 29, 2008 Author Report Posted April 29, 2008 I'll check that out, I never thought about the wipers. Quote
