6 volt or 12 volt?

Hello. I have recently inherited my grandfather's 1950 Dodge Ram 1/2 ton pickup and will begin restoring it this summer. It is currently running off of 6 volts... would you guys recommend I leave it that way or convert it to a 12 volt system? And if so, how involved (aka: expensive) is that? (6 cyl. flathead motor... that's really all i know so far.) I am new to this and would love some advice. Also, I am having a hard time locating people who sell parts... either original or replacement... any links would be much appreciated. Thanks!

Both my car and truck are still 6v. If the 6v stuff is in good shape it will run just fine. Mechanical parts for the most part are easy to find. I get most of my stuff through napa.

Ed is right. If the 6V stuff works, use it. If you care about originality use it. If you plan to have stereo/CD player, extra/powerful lights, air conditioning, you probably need to consider 12V. I kept mine 6V but with an alternator. Since this is my driver year 'round, I wanted the more efficient charging an alternator would give. Other than that and three point seat belts, mine is bone stock.

When I got mine, I wanted to run my GPS, and perhaps the CB radio, but instead of converting the whole thing I just added a $50 inverter that powers that stuff. Six volt system works fine, parts are available at tractor supply stores and so far no problem. As far as the floor starter, just think of it as theft protection.
