Jerry Roberts Posted May 19, 2008 Report Posted May 19, 2008 rotten03 , If you are going with that way of thinking , why don't you use one of those rubberish/plastic type of plugs that snap in . Like on a more modern rear end such as a dakota . They look like they wouldn't hold up but they do the job just fine . I think that I have seen them in the HELP section of the parts stores or a trip to the salvage yard might be in order and get a good measure on the hole while there . Quote
Tom Skinner Posted May 20, 2008 Report Posted May 20, 2008 Greg is right about the loading grease into those rear bearings. The reason Rear End Gear Oil is leaking out there is the inner rear axle seals are shot. I would drill and Tap a "Filler Hole" and Plug into place, drain it, fill it and try it. Or try pulling the drums and determine if that noise is shot rear axle bearings or races. It will only cost a little money and time to try that first before embarking on a totally new rear end. It will probably correct the problem. Tom Quote
BobT-47P15 Posted May 20, 2008 Report Posted May 20, 2008 Did anybody notice the welding job on my differential a few posts back??? Do you think that was a factory job??? Or did someone do what was just suggested.....add a hole? Oh......and I bet the zerks in my rear axle (just mentioned) were the cause of my right inner grease seal leaking. I took the car to a quick lube a year or more ago......asked them to grease all the zerks. They did......probably including those, as he counted twenty- some zerks. This car had gone since 1973 with no leak at that seal. Just took the leak a while to show up after the lube. I continue to learn more things about the P15 from this forum......it's amazing. Quote
Young Ed Posted May 20, 2008 Report Posted May 20, 2008 Bob you shouldn't have zerks back there. Those 2 holes are typically plugged. On occasion you are supposed to pull the plugs and put some grease in there. Now when we do it we do use a zerk and just don't over do it. Don't worry about stuff you haven't learned yet. The guy who gave me the 51 about 2 years ago had owned it since 61 and he never knew about those plugs either. He was pulling the brakes and the axles to grease the wheel bearings. Quote
Guest rotten03 Posted May 20, 2008 Report Posted May 20, 2008 Jerry, I'll look for one of those. Then I dont have to worry about how far into the diff the plug will go. I didn't know they made such things. I'm going to get that done. I've only driven it a couple times since the bad noise has started. Its just getting worse. It makes me cringe. Quote
