Robert Smith Posted March 27, 2008 Report Posted March 27, 2008 Hey guys, it's been some time since I've been on here... things are goin' ok... I had some spare time and had some extra room under the dash since my trusty radio started to act up on me... I took it out and sent it to my buddy who repairs old radios... anyway, I saw I could access the speedo pretty easily (easier then it would have been with the radio in there ) So, I get under the dash and start to take out the speedo... now, some of you know that the needle was pointing at 80mph... hahahaha. Well, as I took the speedo out, the needle dropped out onto my lap! Well, I took a look at it and then pulled out the speedo... now, I put the needle back on and then tested it... moved the needle from 0 to 100 and then it returned to 0 again! AH HA! I thought; maybe it still works! So, I took the needle off and colored the drum a nice green and red... then, I put it back together... Now, the test... I hooked up the speedo cable again and went for a drive... the color green was very nice to see on the dash! I was excited just over that! But, the needle didn't move! Oh well, tomorrow I guess I'll just pop it out again and see if I can maybe attach it better... maybe the shaft is slipping on it? I did notice a little movement! So, if any of you guys know what it might need, let me know... also, what do you lube a speedo with? Graphite or oil? Thanks in advance! -R 1946 P-15 Special Deluxe Quote
Niel Hoback Posted March 27, 2008 Report Posted March 27, 2008 Put a drop of Crazy Glue on the end of the shaft and make sure its pointing at 0 when you put it on. LaBelle lubes are what I used on mine. Its a synthetic, and comes in a very light grease and a fine oil. Get it at hobby shops for lubing electric trains. The toy type. Oh no, I meant MODEL type. Don't wanna start another flame war. Quote
Robert Smith Posted March 28, 2008 Author Report Posted March 28, 2008 Well, she's back in and ready! I took her for a little test drive today and it worked well! Howabout that eh? Me, got my speedo workin'! Man, I'm bustin' me buttons! Now, for a night drive to see that speedo change colors... Ooooooooh! =Rob Stock '46 P-15 Owner. Quote
Don Jordan Posted March 28, 2008 Report Posted March 28, 2008 I am always amazed by this group of grown men and how we can be so pleased by such little things. Here's a guy jubilant about a little needle moving. We put a man on the moon but I screamed louder when my wife pushed the brake and I finally had lights!!! I guess as we get older it takes less to make us happy. Quote
Plymouthy Adams Posted March 28, 2008 Report Posted March 28, 2008 I think it may have more to do with who is doing the job than how big the job really is..there are no Plymouths on the moon..not even a gas station....Coca Cola is still of this planet as is chocolate...face it, the moon is only a nice place to view the earth from... BobT-47P15 Posted March 28, 2008 Report Posted March 28, 2008 Good job there, Rob. I can't remember---did you ever get your car repainted?? I'm the same way about doiing something to the old car.....after getting it done, i stand and look at it for a while. Quote
Niel Hoback Posted March 28, 2008 Report Posted March 28, 2008 I've had this old Plymouth since 1994. Every once in a while when I come home from somewhere, I open the garage door as I come up the drive, and there it is, a big old blue 48 Plymouth looking back at me. Sometimes I have to sit there and look at it for a minute. Pure enjoyment. Quote
Robert Smith Posted March 29, 2008 Author Report Posted March 29, 2008 Good job there, Rob. I can't remember---did you ever get your car repainted?? I'm the same way about doiing something to the old car.....after getting it done, i stand and look at it for a while. Yes, I did get it painted! The original Chevron Blue! And she looks good for a 1 day paint job... the paint is really good, and the job was well done... however, the body work my friend helped me with was kinda poor. But, hands down looks better then she did before. You know, I've been so stoked about my speedo working now! I mean, it's grown a new love for my car! Seeing it green, yellow then RED! Oh BOY! Funny thing... well, sad at the same time... the stupid speedo would have worked had I taken it out long time ago... but, I was too stupid and new to the hobby to feel brave enough to take out the speedo... and too lazy to remove the radio! lol That thing is heavy! So, I had to take the radio out any how... wasn't workin' quite right so, I had all this room to play with! So, I DID! And now it's great! =R Quote
