Norm's Coupe Posted March 25, 2008 Report Posted March 25, 2008 Was going through some recent issues of Classic Car Magazines last night. One issue had a 58 Chevy Impala on the cover with a story about them inside. Was the same color (light blue w/dark blue interior) as the one I owned in the early 60's. Looking at that told me, "I want one again!":D So........even though I said I wasn't going to build another car, I might be forced to. Thought I saw a complete fiberglass body for these advertised about a year ago, but can't find it in a search this morning. Anyone else seen one. Would rather do that than buy a junker and rebuild it. If I find one, guess the coupe will lose it's home in the garage. Quote
bob westphal Posted March 25, 2008 Report Posted March 25, 2008 Norm, The only 50s Chevy I've seen is the '57 by Cars Inc. You might contact them. They might know of somebody that does the '58. For some reason the '58 wasn't that popular. However, I prefer them to the tri fives. 800-carsinc or carsinc.com Quote
Norm's Coupe Posted March 25, 2008 Author Report Posted March 25, 2008 Thanks Bob. The kit I think I saw was a new kit last year. I'll check them out. Quote
Young Ed Posted March 25, 2008 Report Posted March 25, 2008 Bob the 58 hasn't been reproduced but they are far from unpopular. Have you seen the price of a 2dr hardtop lately? Quote
Norm's Coupe Posted March 25, 2008 Author Report Posted March 25, 2008 Bob, Ed's right, a nice 58 Impala 2 door HT will cost you between $50,000 and $100,000 minimum. Rusted out shells are around $10,000. So they are popular. Actually, they were popular back in the 50's and 60's too. It's just that they made that body style only one year. After looking at Cars Inc.'s web site I think I might have just thought I saw a 58 body. The 55 Convertible steel body they came out with is new and it looks like it could be the same ad I saw. So.........I may have to go the other route. Really don't care if it's the Impala or not. I would also go for the lower priced 2 door Biscayne too if the price was right. Quote
Rodney Bullock Posted March 25, 2008 Report Posted March 25, 2008 Norm, I like that Chevy as well. There is nothing wrong with liking other models of auto's other than our beloved Plymouths:o I have my favorites as well, I saw one that you would have liked at Atalantic City last month. While I said the merc was my favorite this was a close second. my wife pulled me away from this one to look at some Studebaker. She just don't know:cool: enjoy! Quote
BobT-47P15 Posted March 25, 2008 Report Posted March 25, 2008 Saw an ad in Hemmings Classic Cars magazine - someone is now making a metal repro 55 Chevy convert body.....just requires a donor cowl, your own frame, interior, glass, etc. Around $34K i think. Quote
Don Coatney Posted March 25, 2008 Report Posted March 25, 2008 Norm; If you are on the prowl why dont you buy a Prowler? It would have all the creature comforts and be dependable for long road trips. I would think this would be right up your alley. You could probably even install your shiverlay engine in one if you want something truely unique. You could even get a mini verson and drive it around your yard on nice days. Quote

Bob, That's Cars Inc who sells the all steel body repop of the 55 Chevy Convertible. Body alone is $30,000, chassis another $6,000 or so and it comes with no interior or motor. The body also dose not include the whole front clip. Cars Inc has all those parts, but they are extra. Complete turn key model is completely built for you in about 16 weeks and that will set you back $185,000. Not to mention the price, but there are two other problems with the car. First, I don't care for owning a convertible, especially up here. Second it's not a 58 Chevy. Don, no offense to all those Prowler fans out there, but I've never liked that car. Now, Rodney had it right, just the wrong color. Would want a blue one. Quote

Don Jordan Posted March 26, 2008 Report Posted March 26, 2008 Norm, I've belonged to the Vintage Chevrolet Club (going on 30 years) and can't seem to cancel my subscription. I will look through the last few months of their magazine and see what is being offered. Now that times are hard cars are getting cheeper. It seems like a barometer of the economy. In good times the car prices go up. My wife will tell you that I've mastered the old money axiom: Buy high, sell low. Of course that's why I don't ever sell. Quote
NatesSedan Posted March 26, 2008 Report Posted March 26, 2008 This was on Portland Oregon Craigslist last week. Looks like a nice start but looks like a nice price as well. http://portland.craigslist.org/wsc/car/610604535.html Quote

If I'm going to buy a car I want it someplace close enough so I can look at it (maybe more than once) before I buy it. If it's one that has to be restored I don't want to pay to haul it home across country. So Norm;If it were a spanking brand new repop 58 shiverlay are you ready to fork out 185K:confused: Don, There's no car I like that much. I wouldn't pay $30,000 for just a body either, even if it was new. Norm,I've belonged to the Vintage Chevrolet Club (going on 30 years) and can't seem to cancel my subscription. Dennis Hemingway Posted March 30, 2008 Report Posted March 30, 2008 Here is a 1958 CHEVROLET DEL RAY For only $95,000 at the Imperial Palace Auto Collection in Las Vegas. If you look close you can see the crossed flags of a fuel injected engine. Dennis:D http://autocollections.com/index.cfm?key=3457&action=details&tab=inventory&cartable= Quote
Don Coatney Posted March 30, 2008 Report Posted March 30, 2008 Dennis; Was fuel injection an option for the small block only or did the big block 348 have this option too? I bought a 58 two door wagon with a 348 in it when I was in the Army. It was a real rust bucket but it ran like a champ. I drove it from Ohio to Georgia and back a couple of times. Quote
Dennis Hemingway Posted March 30, 2008 Report Posted March 30, 2008 I don't know if it was an option for the big block 348 or not. Dennis:( Quote
