Found a picture of my truck that clearly shows the space available. Now only if I had measured.......P8160003.jpg

Not here in MN! Truck hibernates nov-march. I did put a heater in it last fall.

Don, what's the availability of the T-5 compared to the overdrive and how much (if any) modification did you have to do to floor to get it to fit?

Looks like it might fit :) moving that crossmember worries me!

Availability varies per local boneyards. Floor pan modification pictures attached.

Thats possible too Don but Im not sure I trust my welding enough yet to start doing frame mods. Of course thicker stuff is easier then sheetmetal too. Plus this project is supposed to be done on a budget so I gotta find a cheap 5spd too. The Upull yard is having 1/2 price wednesdays right now so I might try to catch one then. At least for trucks there are no floor mods required and no welding to do on the bellhousing.

Ed, I have a 5-speed from the u-pull yard in Rosemount from a 91 or 92 S-10 with the electric speedo. It has the 3:79 first gear and I had it checked out at TSI tranny shop and it was deemed very good. All it needs is to be re-sealed. You can have it for what I have in it. They charge for the core and tax extra. Hows $95 bucks??

Don, when I make it to your neighborhood, I'd better get a ride in that hot rod. If I remember right, there are some T-5s that are more adaptable to the Mopars. something about shifter location, input shafts,..?

Posted

How does that elec speedo effect things? Is there a converter available? If so is it expensive? And what do you mean my re-sealed?

Norm;

T-5's come in two basic flavors. World Class and Non World Class. The WC versions are used in cars and the shifter sits on the rear of the tailstock as pictured below. This would have put it right in the middle of my bench seat. The NWC versions are used in small trucks and the shifter sits on the front of the tailstock. Perfect for a P-15. There are other differences such as ratios and input splines. But the truck ratio works very well with my flathead 6.

Talk about coincedence. Friends and I went to BWWs for dinner. Came out and a crusty old S10 was parked next to us. In the bed was a 5spd! Too bad no owner to be found.

Ed. when they took it apart they didn`t put new housing gaskets in. The converter for the electric to mechanical can run a bit spendy, but I have heard they run less than the $300 bucks. Some guys have seen them on the trannys at the bone yards and swap meets. The mechanical ones are getting harder to find so I picked up the electric some time back. I just got lucky at the U-pull it place when they dragged in a early Sonoma when I was there. It had the mech speedo. I was going to use the electric till I ran across a mechanical one. I brought both in to be checked and was going to use the best of both, when I came back to pick them up he said they were both good. Do what you like---the offer is still good.

Ed , I have seen a picture of a T5 in a 1939 - 1947 dodge truck . There was a large notch taken out of the crossmember and a chunk of steel welded in to replace the strength . If I remember correctly the truck belonged to the brother in law of the owner of Langdons Stovebolt , his last name is Stange and first name is probably Elmer , Tom helped him with the conversion . I bought the kit to install the T5 in my truck but decided to go with a 2.94 rear instead because of the emergency brake . If you decide to put in the T5 your truck , can have my kit and give me something else down the road .

Thanks Jerry. Probably wont be doing much besides research until spring. Do you know if this piece was removeable in case of a tranny or clutch issue? I wouldn't want to have to pull the motor in case of any issues.

Ed , It has been a few years since I saw the picture but it looked like a short quarter inch thick piece of steel laid on top of the crossmember and welded . As to if there was enough room to still be able to pull the new transmission separately , that is a good question . You might be able to ask Tom Langdon and he might refer you to his brother in law for an answer . I had emailed Mr . Stange reguarding what he was going to do for an emergency brake and he didn't yet have an answer . Perhaps if the crossmember is riveted in place , replaceing the rivets with bolts would allow movement enough for transission removal .

That cross member is indeed riveted in. And its the first one after the engine cradle so its quite beefy and I would imagine important. I do have going for me a bare frame that would be easy to flip if needed.

Correct Norm forgot to mention that part. Intention with the 5spd swap is to also swap a rear end.

This is a picture of the engine in Elmer's truck. Not sure what transmission he will be using.

Thats a nice looking engine. Is it the long 6? I've got 2 possible custom intakes I can use for mine. Time will tell what this truck ends up as when I finally start building

Believe it is a long block but not sure. Pete (blusskies) may have more information..
