Don Jordan Posted January 9, 2008 Report Posted January 9, 2008 I'm having my Plymouth restored (I'm not talented enough to do it). The mechanic said the windshield was scratched and I should replace them. I've been calling some places that deal in old cars and they want a lot of money for a used windshield. For a lark I called an auto glass place and they said they would cut a new windshield for me for $65 @. My question - is there a special glass? Has anyone had glass cut? I'm afraid I'll get it back and it won't fit. second question: all the window channeling I've found is 5/8" - the stuff I've pulled out of my car is 1/2". Will that 1/8" make a difference. I was looking at Restoration Specialties catalog on line - they have a part 3a1 that fits "Chrysler Corp. Cars 30s & 40s" and it's 5/8". thanks Quote
Plymouthy Adams Posted January 9, 2008 Report Posted January 9, 2008 this is just plain laminated safety glass..NOT to be tempered...even the side glass is not required to be tempered but is very much recommended...my glass cutter, Vintage Glass cut the side glass from plate glass of proper dimensions and sends it out to be fired (tempered) and cuts the front laminated windshield pieces in the loal shop..still fairly reasonable..I also have the choice of tint band and full tint glass in Gray, Blue and Green...I think they used to offer bronze but not anymore. Not sure but if you get the package deal of all glass they do excellent pricing..you should be able to find a local Vintage Glass outlet near you..if not and interested..PM me will get the phone number to you..I usually get myglass at the car show..and then they pay shipment to me...been very good folks to deal with Quote
Don Jordan Posted January 9, 2008 Author Report Posted January 9, 2008 Thank you very much - I guess I will Google them. How does the tinting work? Would that be considered 'stock'? I don't think I've ever noticed a stock old car with tinted windows. That doesn't mean they aren't out there. Quote
47heaven Posted January 9, 2008 Report Posted January 9, 2008 Don...$65 is not bad...I paid $85 to have the two glass pieces cut...($5 a piece). My winshield wasn't scratched, just bubbled around the edges. Nonetheless...it had to go. Quote
Plymouthy Adams Posted January 9, 2008 Report Posted January 9, 2008 No.the tinted glass (100% color) is not stock and is for custom look..just mentioned to show just how diversified the company is. My 51 wagon is going mint green..so I go all the glass in a green tint.. Quote
bob westphal Posted January 9, 2008 Report Posted January 9, 2008 Don, The easy way to replace your glass is to have your local shop do it. As you can see the glass is pretty low cost. I found out first hand that installing it yourself can be extremely frustrating and costly because of all the extra times you have to have new glass made. I've found the pros do it much better and you get to keep more of your hair. Quote
Plymouthy Adams Posted January 9, 2008 Report Posted January 9, 2008 that answer don't seem in context with your profile... Quote
