Robin (UK) Posted December 22, 2007 Report Posted December 22, 2007 Wow! Some heavy impacts there. This poor P15 was in a fatal collision. Quote
Plymouthy Adams Posted December 22, 2007 Report Posted December 22, 2007 Robin this was propably a pretty high speed impact..relates to about 27 MPH today with the crumple zones incorporated into todays vehicles..the discussion came up at the wrecking yard just this week regarding GM's plastic bumper corners..yes no steel..it is all on air bag to prevent bounce and crumple zones to absorb energy..passenger survivability is the key..the car is just metal and plastic..it can be replaced relatively cheap..the new industry standard Quote
47heaven Posted December 23, 2007 Report Posted December 23, 2007 In almost all photos of head-on collisions from that time, someone's head had hit the winshield or gone through it. That's why I replaced my glass with the type that crumples into little pieces...I believe it's tempered glass. I just hate the thought of eating the hard, steel dashboard, as well. Quote
PatS.... Posted December 23, 2007 Author Report Posted December 23, 2007 The danger of tempered glass in a windshield is that what would be a simple rock chip on laminated glass would shatter tempered glass. If you get rock chip at speed that shatters the glass, that shattered glass could easily fill your eyes with little pieces of glass, blinding you at 60 mph. Tempered glass is not safe for a windshield at all. Laminated glass will just chip, and many times that chip can be repaired as to be invisible. Please rethink your decision to have tempered glass in the windshield. Rely on the seat belts to stop you from going through the windshield, not the windshield. Quote

As I had said, I thought it was tempered. As I recall, as he was making the window, it looked like he glued two pieces of glass together or something. Is that tempered or laminated? I think I may have had tempered on the side windows...can't be sure. Quote
Plymouthy Adams Posted December 23, 2007 Report Posted December 23, 2007 Darin, most glass companies know what glass goes where..I am certain that you more than not got tempered glass in the side lites and laminated safety glass in the front windshield. Tempered glass was not a requirement..it is anupgraded safety glass ..requires glass to be cut then shipped tobe firred for temepr then returned to the glass cutter and back to you..the cost of fuel and transporting to and from has had a impact on glass prices also...cunsumer has topay the coast of all expenses. My wagon got 10 pieces of tempered and the two saftey glass for the windshield all in a green tint.. Quote
