kballein Posted Wednesday at 02:38 PM Report Posted Wednesday at 02:38 PM I have a 1940 Dodge D14 and a 1999 Ford Explorer disc brake rear end. I'm looking for information on successful swaps and how you setup the Master Cylinder. I'm also going to install front disc brakes. Master Cylinder options for the 40 Dodge don't seem to be plentiful. I'm fine with manual master cylinders as long the pedal pressure isn't too bad. I would like to use the original pedal and under the floor location. Quote
vintage6t Posted Wednesday at 04:08 PM Report Posted Wednesday at 04:08 PM I'm installing a Explorer 8.8 disc rear and front discs in my car as well. It's a 50 Desoto convertible. Here is how I mounted the master cylinder for use with the original pedal. Your application is different but it may give you some ideas on how to proceed. Also since my car is a convertible, the frame is reinforced with an X cross member with a steel tunnel in the center for the drive shaft to fit through. Because the Explorer rear center section is offset by about 3 inches to the passenger side I couldn't use it as. That is because of limited side clearance in the frame's drive shaft tunnel. If not for the tunnel, the rear would have worked without modification. To better center the pinion, I cut and swapped the axle tubes and axles side to side. I basically did this https://www.trifive.com/posts/998087/ The car is not on the road yet, so can't speak to success or failure but thought I'd share anyway. Quote
Plymouthy Adams Posted Wednesday at 04:17 PM Report Posted Wednesday at 04:17 PM many rear gears are offset and is not a problem to deal with at all....is it invasive, yes to a degree but not at all that difficult to do at home and likelihood of doing a retrofit without body mods is slim. You get out only that you wish to introduce. This is the modified floor section on my 48 business coupe to allow for a wider tunnel for the driveshaft. Photo taken right after welding and primer applied. While I did not install rear disc, I do have fully functional ABS brakes in conjunction with my 12.1 rotors up front. These brakes are amazing on this car. Quote
65bcoda Posted Wednesday at 08:42 PM Report Posted Wednesday at 08:42 PM I cant help you much on the MC install as mine is going on the firewall with hanging pedals, but I did go the invasive route and modded the floor pan and tunnel in order to gain clearances and preferred ride height.. 1 Quote
