miker Posted August 9, 2024 Report Posted August 9, 2024 Hi all, I'm replacing points on my 41 Dodge Business coupe. The existing set has a steel and copper 'spring' but my replacement set from a reputable vintage Mopar supplier only has the steel spring. Does this matter? What's the difference? Pics attached for reference Also, I've heard about 'floating' points if the spring isn't attached correctly. I assume one/or both of the springs should be secured by the small screw that also hold the fabric covered wire (which was frayed and I repaired). Thanks for any advice you might offer. Quote
Plymouthy Adams Posted August 9, 2024 Report Posted August 9, 2024 if you do not use both look for points bounce to be a major player in limited rpms and inability to achieve speed.... Quote
miker Posted August 9, 2024 Author Report Posted August 9, 2024 Thanks. So the replacement set with one spring is then inferior and i should dress/re-use the existing two spring set up? Quote
Plymouthy Adams Posted August 9, 2024 Report Posted August 9, 2024 not saying that.....if supplied with two use both (strap and spring)....if supplied with one the contact strap is likely already bonded in place. Some units have the contact strap floating thus the second spring which is not a true spring but just a strap. Quote
miker Posted August 9, 2024 Author Report Posted August 9, 2024 Thanks for clarifying - makes sense! Quote
